At present, Barcelona have absolutely no specialist senior strikers on their books. And the transfer window has less than a week remaining. That's a fairly significant problem.
Publicly, club president Joan Laporta continues to play hardball with Atlético Madrid over Julián Alvarez, but behind closed doors it seems the reigning La Liga champions are, at minimum, exploring alternative targets to plug the Robert Lewandowski-sized void at the top of their attack.
One name in the frame is USMNT forward Folarin Balogun, with L'Equipe reporting that Barça have "expressed their interest" in the Monaco striker.
They aren't the only club to have taken notice of the New York-born ex-Arsenal talent, with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur also mentioned as suitors. However, it's the Barcelona connection that will truly capture American attention.

Appearing on Alexi Lalas's State of the Union Podcast, former player-turned-pundit Stu Holden responded enthusiastically to the unexpected rumor.
"Would it shock me if Barcelona decided to sign Flo Balogun?" Holden said.
"He has tremendous ability on the ball. He's demonstrated he can find the net at a high level. He's featured in the Champions League. He has pace. He can manufacture goals himself. His hold-up play is solid.
"So, honestly, I'd be fascinated if he got the chance to make a move to Barcelona. I think he could absolutely succeed there."

Before this summer, Balogun was relatively under the radar on the world stage, but he raised his profile considerably with a string of impressive performances for Mauricio Pochettino's attack-minded USMNT at the World Cup, netting three goals across four matches.
The 25-year-old's brace in the 4–1 tournament-opening victory over Paraguay made him a household name in the U.S., as he stepped up as the team's main attacking threat in Christian Pulisic's absence. He inevitably generated further headlines when President Donald Trump weighed in following his red card in the last-32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but on the pitch, Balogun's reputation has been steadily growing for some time.
He was awarded Monaco's Player of the Season for 2025–26 after scoring 19 goals in 43 appearances, including five in the Champions League.
Over four seasons in France—first at Reims, then Monaco—he has evolved into a sharp finisher with blistering pace, intelligent movement off the ball, and the ability to use both feet effectively; all attributes that could be further developed in a truly elite setting at Barcelona.
Such is the quality of Balogun's finishing that former Arsenal defender Martin Keown once drew comparisons between him and club legend Ian Wright. That said, he is not a conventional target man. While Balogun tends to shine in open space, he can find it harder when required to hold the ball up or operate in congested areas.
He is also a streaky performer. His 19-goal tally last season featured a run of eight league goals in eight matches during the spring, bookended by dry spells. His record of 12 senior goals in 31 caps for the USMNT is respectable, but not outstanding.
Under different circumstances, as a squad-depth option, Balogun might well be considered a sensible acquisition for a club like Barcelona, but right now the Spanish giants are seeking a proven starter capable of leading their attack to silverware.
As things stand, making the leap from leading the line at Monaco to the Camp Nou would represent an enormous step up for Balogun.
What Would it Mean for U.S. Soccer?
It would be no exaggeration to say that a Balogun move to Barcelona would rank as the most significant transfer in the history of U.S. men's soccer.
While Pulisic secured his high-profile move to Chelsea in 2019 and subsequently AC Milan, neither club carries quite the global prestige of Barcelona—who are ranked as the second-most supported club in the U.S. behind Manchester United, according to YouGov.
The likes of Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Weston McKennie and Chris Richards have all featured for major European clubs, but not quite at this level.
Given the unique situation, Balogun would be expected to walk straight into the starting lineup as the main striker for one of the most storied and celebrated clubs on the planet—something no U.S. player has previously achieved.
Only two American men's players have previously worn the Barcelona shirt—Sergiño Dest and Konrad de la Fuente.
From a commercial standpoint, the transfer could prove mutually advantageous for both Barcelona and U.S. soccer, with a 'BALOGUN 9' shirt in Barça's iconic burgundy and blue certain to fly off shelves across America on the back of a well-received home World Cup.
How Much Would a Deal Cost and How Likely Is It?
L'Equipe's report stops short of naming a specific fee, but states that Monaco would demand a "significant sum."
Separate reports have suggested it could take around $70 million to prise the forward away from Ligue 1. Given current market conditions and interest from Premier League clubs, that figure doesn't appear unreasonable.
Whether Barcelona would be prepared to meet that price is another question entirely. For now, Laporta seems firmly focused on Atlético Madrid's Alvarez, but with the September 1 transfer deadline fast approaching, the situation remains fluid.
The player himself appears to be preparing for a move somewhere, having been omitted from Monaco's Ligue 1 opener against Le Havre and their Europa Conference League first leg against Gornik Zabrze.
