This year's World Cup is the largest in history. Not content with just 32 teams as was the case until recently, FIFA has expanded the tournament to accommodate 48 nations from around the world.
The field includes 10 African sides, 16 from Europe, six from South America, nine from Asia, and seven from central and North America. Four nations will be making their World Cup debut.
But how closely have you been following all the qualified nations? And most importantly, how many of the 48 teams can you identify in just five minutes?

The World Cup Format Changes
The first-ever World Cup in 1930, held in Uruguay, featured just 13 teams. That number grew to 16 for the tournaments hosted by Italy and France in 1934 and 1938 respectively.
By 1950, the field had dropped back to 13 teams, and oddly, there was no traditional final match. The tournaments from 1954 through 1978 returned to 16 teams, before the field expanded to 24 for the 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1994 editions.
From France 1998 through to Qatar 2022, the 32-team format became the version most fans know best. That was followed by arguably the most significant structural change yet — an expansion from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 tournament.
