Andy Robertson's return to Anfield has been moved up by over three months thanks to the Carabao Cup third-round draw.
Robertson signed with Tottenham Hotspur as a free agent after his Liverpool contract ended in late June. Although the Premier League schedule had originally penciled in Dec. 19 as the Scotland international's first visit back to Anfield, Wednesday's Carabao Cup draw has pushed that reunion forward to mid-September.
Liverpool and Spurs will clash for a spot in the fourth round of the tournament during the week beginning Monday, Sept. 14.
Robertson last appeared at Anfield as an away player a decade ago, representing Hull City in a 5–1 loss in Sept. 2016. Over the following 10 years, he made 378 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Premier League twice and earning Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup medals.
The 32-year-old left back made his Tottenham debut in last weekend's embarrassing Premier League season opener against Brentford, featuring for the full 90 minutes of the shock 3–0 loss.
The Carabao Cup draw has produced a similar situation for Carlos Baleba, Manchester United's latest signing. The Cameroonian midfielder completed his move from Brighton & Hove Albion this week in a deal potentially worth $95 million (£70 million) and could now face his former club almost straight away, rather than waiting until January.
United will welcome the Seagulls in the same week Liverpool host Spurs — four months ahead of their scheduled Premier League encounter, with Baleba's first return to Brighton not set until Jan. 2, 2027 at the Amex Stadium.
Since this cup tie will be held at Old Trafford, Baleba will still need to wait until January to step back onto his former home ground. Earlier this week, the 22-year-old shared an emotional video message to Brighton supporters on social media, expressing how much the club has meant to him.
