Whenever a player joins a new club, one of the first questions that gets raised—beyond the standard queries about how they'll fit in and what role they'll play—is which jersey number they'll be wearing.
It's almost as consequential as the transfer itself, given the weight certain numbers carry in a club's history. At Manchester United, the scrutiny over a player's squad number runs even deeper than most.
Carlos Baleba already carries a heavy burden of expectation on his young shoulders. His move to Old Trafford is seen as the final piece of a midfield puzzle that also saw Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos added this summer, and with a £70 million ($95.5 million) price tag attached, Baleba is expected to hit the ground running.
As if that weren't enough pressure for Baleba—who comes across as remarkably composed and mature for a 22-year-old—he's inherited the No. 20 shirt at Manchester United, a number that might not immediately seem significant, but carries real weight once you look into its history.
The History of Baleba's New Number
Diogo Dalot was the most recent wearer of the No. 20, but the Portuguese full-back made the same number switch that Gary Neville made back in 1996, when he cemented his place as Sir Alex Ferguson's first-choice right back and moved to No. 2.
Dalot may not be quite as entrenched in his position, but donning that number does hint that Michael Carrick will prefer him over Noussair Mazraoui when both players are fully fit.
The No. 20 gained real significance after Neville vacated it, when a young Norwegian striker took it on and quickly earned the nickname 'the baby-faced assassin.' That player? None other than Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
His legacy at United is well documented, but worth noting is that the No. 20 was on Solskjær's back when he turned the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich on its head with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.
It's a number Solskjær wore throughout his entire United career, during which he claimed 12 major honours including six Premier League titles. If Baleba can come anywhere close to that, he'll have had a remarkable time of it.
Robin van Persie also donned the No. 20 on his way to winning the Premier League title and the Golden Boot in 2012–13. The Dutchman netted 30 goals in his debut campaign—having chosen to leave then-Premier League champions Arsenal in pursuit of trophies—and swiftly became the standout star of Ferguson's final season.
Van Persie's stint at United proved relatively brief, as age and injury began to take their toll, and no player of Baleba's calibre has worn the number since.

How Important Will Baleba Be?
Baleba won't be making the same goalscoring impact as a Solskjær or a Van Persie—that simply isn't his remit. What he will bring, however, is exceptional athleticism to United's midfield: a dynamism and intensity that has been sorely missing for several years, which should translate into a more effective press and a greater ability to win back possession before driving forward and launching attacks.
It's hoped that Baleba's attributes will complement the recently signed Tielemans, freeing the Belgian playmaker to pick passes between the lines and control the tempo of games. That could in turn allow Bruno Fernandes to be even more influential than he was during 2025–26, though whether the reigning PFA Player of the Year can match his remarkable assist tally remains to be seen.
At the very least, United's opening-day loss to Hull City made clear that Tielemans and Santos lack the mobility and intensity to handle physical, direct opponents—areas where Baleba is expected to offer a significant upgrade.
