When questioned about whether he would still be in the dugout when Manchester United take on Roma on Tuesday, embattled Michael Carrick gave a straightforward answer: "Yes."
The English manager was once again put on the spot—fielding a barrage of reporters questioning his future at the club—after United's 2–0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The Red Devils have now gone nine games without a win across all competitions, their worst stretch of form in 38 years.
With every fresh defeat, Carrick's grip on his position grows increasingly tenuous. It matters little that his side dominated Chelsea in the opening half, or that they were effectively powerless after Lisandro Martínez was dismissed in the 63rd minute; results are all that count at United.
Nevertheless, Carrick appeared reasonably assured that he would still be on the touchline when Champions League football arrives next week. He told TNT Sports he anticipates remaining United's manager for the crucial showdown with Roma, and later added: "I'm just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek now."
The coming days will reveal whether Carrick's self-assurance is justified or merely wishful thinking.
Poor Luck Doesn't Erase United's Shortcomings

Much like the previous weekend following the club's loss to Bournemouth, Carrick was met with cheers and backing from the United supporters after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge. The players, however, were greeted with jeers from the away end.
"There is a lot of emotion," Carrick said. "We're a great football club, and we want to win football matches. The supporters come, make a lot of effort, pay a lot of money to watch us play. You can see from today the boys had the game in the right place and things have gone against us.
"Things have gone against us and gone against us in a big way. Unraveled quickly. There's a lot of emotion right now. We have got to move forward and take the things that worked for us today. A lot of the good things, especially in the first half and use that moving forward."
Carrick has a point when he says fortune has not favored United throughout their winless run. An incorrectly awarded goal from Enzo Fernández sealed the Red Devils' fate in the Manchester derby. Leny Yoro's dismissal left the side with 10 men in their 2–0 defeat to Atlético Madrid. This time around, it was Martínez who derailed what had been a largely encouraging display against Chelsea.

Injuries have also robbed Carrick of several key starters, including Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Šeško, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu, for extended periods.
But there is little to excuse United's calamitous exit to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup third round, or their embarrassing defeats to Como and Bournemouth. The club's midfield overhaul appears to have largely misfired, and the backline has been in need of serious reinforcement for at least three seasons.
Responsibility is shared among the players, United sporting director Jason Wilcox and Carrick, yet only the manager faces the immediate threat of dismissal.
Carrick's Final Chances to Save His Job

Should Carrick hold on to his position at least until the November international break, he has two remaining opportunities to restore the confidence of United's hierarchy. First on the agenda is the Champions League encounter with Roma on Tuesday.
The Italian side have suffered just one defeat this season across all competitions, a 4–3 loss to Real Madrid that they arguably should have avoided. Roma have also been kept scoreless only once in 2026–27, a worrying statistic for a vulnerable United backline.
If Carrick comes through the midweek fixture, he will then lead the Red Devils against Aston Villa. Unai Emery's side made a shaky start to the campaign but have since hit their stride, claiming seven wins from their last eight matches across all competitions.
Disappointing outcomes in either—or both—of those fixtures will likely spell the end for Carrick. Potential successors Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are reportedly on standby, though it will take far more than a managerial change to restore this United side to the standards the club has long since left behind.
