Carrick Drops Major Update on Martinez Comeback Ahead of Crucial Bournemouth Clash

Michael Carrick has confirmed that center-back Lisandro Martínez will miss Manchester United's clash with Bournemouth on Friday, though he expects the Argentine defender to be completely ready following the international break.

Martínez had been anticipated to return from his calf injury earlier this month, however he experienced a minor complication during training sessions, necessitating an adjustment to his rehabilitation process after already missing a projected comeback date.

Everything seems to be progressing positively for Martínez, with Carrick confident he'll be available for the Leeds United fixture following the international break on April 13.

"He's making progress," Carrick acknowledged. "So following this match, I believe he'll be ready."

Some of the worry regarding Martínez's complication stemmed from the continued struggle with a back problem affecting teammate Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutch defender was initially ruled out in November with early assessments indicating a return within weeks. De Ligt hasn't featured since and no timeline exists for his potential return.

"It's quite similar really and disappointing for Matta," Carrick explained.

"He's clearly working hard to return but it's the back problem that's proving challenging. We'll continue working as diligently as possible to get him back as soon as we can."

With De Ligt remaining unavailable, the prospect of Martínez's return provides significant relief for a United squad whose defensive options are currently restricted to Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven.

Few players within the United squad comprehend the challenges of injury rehabilitation like midfielder Mason Mount. Following his transfer from Chelsea in 2023 for a deal potentially worth $75.7 million (£60 million), he has managed only 66 appearances in all competitions, sitting out 58 matches due to different fitness issues.

Mount returned to the squad as an unused substitute during the 3–1 victory over Aston Villa last weekend, with Carrick emphasizing that no undue risks will be taken regarding his comeback.

"A start would be excessive, I believe, at this stage," Carrick commented about the midfielder.

"Considering his training time and match exposure recently. But it's wonderful to have him available. He's an exceptional player, Mason, and great to have back with the squad.

"So I'm thrilled to have him back and, naturally, the upcoming break provides him an opportunity to become even more match-ready. In many ways, the timing works well for him."
