Carrick Shocks with Bold Team Selection: Benches United Star for Sesko Against Crystal Palace

Michael Carrick has included Amad Diallo on the bench for the first time while giving Benjamin Šeško his deserved starting opportunity against Crystal Palace following his impressive recent displays.

Šeško hadn't featured in Carrick's starting lineup during his initial six games as manager. Following his bench role during the memorable Manchester derby victory, the tall Slovenian striker received just nine minutes of action versus Arsenal before finally making his impact in the Fulham fixture a month prior.

Introduced with a quarter-hour remaining, Šeško could only watch as United's midfield collapsed at Old Trafford without Casemiro, who witnessed his teammates surrender the commanding 2–0 lead he had worked so hard to establish. Šeško quickly became the hero, netting a dramatic 94th-minute winner that foreshadowed his upcoming exploits.

In matches against both West Ham United and Everton, the summer signing from RB Leipzig entered as a substitute to score crucial goals that altered the final results. Despite this excellent form, Carrick had continued with Bryan Mbeumo as the central striker, recently supported by Matheus Cunha and Amad behind Bruno Fernandes.

Šeško's excellent streak of displays has earned him this well-deserved opportunity, and it's hardly shocking that Amad is the player who loses his place.

Amad Diallo

Throughout the highs and lows of Ruben Amorim's controversial tenure, Amad stood out as one of the rare positives. A dynamic attacking player who successfully adjusted to an unfamiliar wingback position, the Ivory Coast star managed to influence games in the final third while fulfilling his defensive duties. Amad's excellence was so evident that Amorim publicly requested the club find a right-footed equivalent of the 23-year-old.

Amad netted his second goal of the campaign in a characteristically wild 4–4 stalemate with Bournemouth at Old Trafford before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, where he maintained his scoring form for the Elephants.

Upon his return, Amorim had been dismissed and Carrick installed. Mbeumo's move to a striker role enabled Amad to resume his preferred right-wing position, raising expectations for increased offensive output. However, he has failed to register a goal or assist under the new management.

This isn't due to wasteful finishing. While United have shown collective improvement since being freed from Amorim's tactical constraints, Amad has suffered an individual decline. During Carrick's opening six fixtures, the skillful left-footer is attempting and creating fewer shots of significantly lower quality compared to the season's first four months.

When measured against a player experiencing Šeško's current purple patch, it would be almost negligent for Carrick to persist with Amad.
