Carrick's Bold Mainoo Declaration Cranks Up Pressure on Amorim's United Plans
Manchester United's temporary manager Michael Carrick has showered praise on emerging midfielder Kobbie Mainoo while acknowledging that the academy product had been wrongly "categorized" during former coach Ruben Amorim's reign.
After nearly departing this month due to frustration over limited playing time, Mainoo has become a crucial component of Carrick's short-term leadership and has evidently impressed.
"I appreciate how Kobbie receives the ball," Carrick shared with Sky Sports. "I believe that's a fundamental aspect of being a footballer, and becoming an elite player means being capable of handling the pressure.
"He's entered at such a tender age and participated in significant matches during the Euros for England and for Manchester United, playing crucial roles in those contests. So simply being able to handle pressure, initially, is enormous and he's demonstrated he can manage it.
"He receives the ball, he moves fluidly, he can perform, he can operate somewhat deeper at times, he can function higher up the pitch depending on his teammates.
"I believe sometimes we can categorize players into specific roles too hastily and that's not always accurate. Sometimes you recognize qualities in a player and you adjust slightly, similar to Patrick [Dorgu] operating in a more advanced position. Suddenly, opportunities emerge.
"Kobbie can fulfill various positions within that framework, but certainly with Casemiro in the center during our recent matches we've established an excellent partnership. They've been instrumental in managing the team."

Amorim encountered substantial criticism throughout his tenure as United's manager, mainly concerning his dedication to a 3-4-2-1 system. Beyond that, his utilization of Mainoo was the primary worry among supporters.

Mainoo wasn't just affected by the limited midfield positions in Amorim's preferred system, but he also found it difficult to overcome the former manager's conviction that he was most suitable as backup for Bruno Fernandes, who was assigned a deeper position in Amorim's midfield setup.
Positioned behind the team's star player in the hierarchy, Mainoo was destined to face playing time challenges. However, since Carrick's appointment, circumstances have transformed significantly.
By repositioning Fernandes to his most effective attacking midfield role in a 4-2-3-1 system, Carrick has created an opening in the central partnership that Mainoo has enthusiastically seized.
Mainoo has already secured two starting positions under Carrick, receiving the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities in a comprehensive role reminiscent of what the current manager experienced during his playing career.
"He's incredibly young, Kobbie, and he's experienced genuine peaks, he's faced setbacks, that's normal," Carrick added.
"I experienced similar situations myself during my youth when developing. It's no different. It enhances him, it strengthens him, it provides him with more experience and he's displaying that currently. He's delightful to observe."
