For the first time in nearly 21 months, Manchester United fielded both Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo together in a competitive starting lineup.
The two homegrown talents had appeared destined to form the backbone of the club they both grew up idolizing. Both were regulars under Erik ten Hag following Mainoo's emergence in 2023–24, and each featured in the starting XI that dismantled Manchester City so emphatically in that summer's FA Cup final.
Mainoo was the first to fall out of favor as injuries piled up the following season, but Ruben Amorim proceeded to sideline both fan favorites. The pair started just one game together under the Portuguese boss — a 4–0 demolition of Everton on Dec. 1, 2024 — a full 637 days before Sunday's home clash against Ipswich Town.
Rashford had actually netted twice in that match, yet Amorim remained unmoved. The notoriously candid head coach famously cautioned: "The storm will come." In the cases of Rashford and Mainoo specifically, those words proved prophetic.
While the technically gifted central midfielder was confined to the bench, Rashford was excluded from matchday squads entirely, eventually heading out on loan spells to Aston Villa and Barcelona. Since Carrick's arrival, both England internationals have been welcomed back into the fold.

Summer Signing Made to Pay for Disastrous Debut
Despite his efforts to deflect the backlash directed at his squad following last weekend's woeful Premier League opener against Hull City, Carrick had to make changes. There were precious few positives to take from the 2–0 defeat, and it was Andrey Santos who ultimately bore the consequences.
The summer arrival from Chelsea formed an untested midfield partnership alongside fellow newcomer Youri Tielemans. Both players were overrun by Hull's intensity, repeatedly surrendering the ball as the hosts caused chaos on the counter-attack.
Santos was dropped in favor of Mainoo for Ipswich's visit on Sunday, though it remains unclear whether the structural vulnerabilities Hull exposed will also be addressed by this change in personnel. The Tigers found considerable success down the flanks, delivering a steady stream of crosses from the space vacated behind both fullbacks. Mainoo should bring greater composure, but whether he can provide the defensive solidity this team so clearly lacks is an entirely different question.
