As Manchester United travel to Sunderland on Saturday, two notable players will be absent from the squad: Casemiro and Benjamin Šeško.
Šeško's absence was anticipated, as the forward was substituted at the break during last Sunday's clash with Liverpool. Speaking on Friday, interim boss Michael Carrick confirmed the Slovenian has been managing a persistent shin problem and is unlikely to feature in the weekend fixture.
Casemiro's absence, however, came as a surprise ahead of the trip to the Stadium of Light. The Brazilian midfield stalwart has reportedly sustained a "minor injury", though he is expected to be available to return next week for his farewell appearance at Old Trafford as a Red Devil.
With both players unavailable, Carrick was compelled to make significant adjustments to his starting eleven. Joshua Zirkzee steps in for United's top scorer at the No. 9 role for his first start under Carrick, while Mason Mount earns his maiden midfield start in the Carrick era, supported by Amad and Matheus Cunha. Mount will operate ahead of skipper Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in the engine room, with Manuel Ugarte also ruled out after picking up a knock in training this week.
What Does This Mean for Man Utd?

The loss of Casemiro and Šeško is not considered damaging, particularly as both injuries appear to be minor in nature.
Carrick's men are in a strong position, having secured their first league double over Liverpool in ten years last weekend with a 3–2 win, which locked in third-placed United's place in Champions League football next season — their primary objective heading into the 2025–26 campaign. They are on track for their finest league season since 2022–23, ranking among the top-performing sides in the division since Carrick took the helm, despite a few stumbles along the way.
With three matches remaining in the season (including Saturday's encounter with Sunderland), Carrick is clearly eager to close out the league campaign on a high note with an eye on securing the managerial role permanently; however, he also voiced confidence in his entire squad and a desire to rotate the lineup, particularly given the reduced pressure at this stage.
"I think every player in the squad has been absolutely fantastic, I have to say," Carrick said at his press conference on Thursday.
"Some have played a lot more than others and I understand from a professional and a playing point of view it can be difficult, but the togetherness and the support that the players have shown, certainly each other, is great to see."
He added: "It's the balance that we've made the most of really, so coming into these games it's something we're aware of. I think it's really something we're keen on playing well and still trying to get good results as well, but it's definitely something to be aware of."
