Cavan Sullivan Hits a Wall: MLS Drops Fine and Issues Fierce Wake-Up Call to Young Star

Cavan Sullivan Hits a Wall: MLS Drops Fine and Issues Fierce Wake-Up Call to Young Star

Major League Soccer has handed a fine to Philadelphia Union winger Cavan Sullivan following his simulation during the closing moments of his team's 2–2 stalemate with Charlotte FC.

In the 84th minute, Sullivan went down after a challenge from Charlotte defender Morrison, who quickly protested that there had been no contact. Experienced midfielder Ashley Westwood wasted no time in confronting the young player about the incident on the field.

Following a review of the incident, MLS released a statement saying: "The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan for violating the league's policy regarding simulation/embellishment in the 84th minute of Philadelphia's match against Charlotte FC on Oct. 17."

The specific amount of the fine levied against Sullivan has not been disclosed.

It rounded out a disappointing performance for Sullivan, who also had a goal ruled out for offside earlier in the second half. The match brought an end to a 10-game streak of at least one goal contribution, marking his first MLS appearance without a goal or assist since Aug. 1.

Westwood: Sullivan Needs to Stop Diving to Reach Next Level

Sullivan may be the standout name in MLS at the moment, but Charlotte captain Westwood has plenty of experience navigating life at soccer's highest levels.

The 36-year-old Englishman racked up 286 Premier League appearances over 10 seasons with Aston Villa and Burnley before joining Charlotte in 2023.

Westwood acknowledged after the match that Sullivan possesses everything needed for a long career in Europe, but he had one straightforward piece of advice for the teenager: stop the diving.

"I've only seen him today, really," Westwood said. "He's a talented player.

"I don't like his diving. He needs to stop that. I said that to him. If he wants to go to the next level, he needs to stop that.

"He's a top player. For someone his age, he's got a very, very good future in the game. Like I said, he's not scared to say things. He tries things. He runs around. He's got all the attributes."

This was not Sullivan's first disciplinary matter this season. He was sent off in the 13th minute of stoppage time against Inter Miami in August after getting involved in a heated altercation while coming to the defense of his brother Quinn.

However, the one-game ban that would have followed was overturned after the Union successfully appealed the decision.
