Cesc Fabregas Breaks Silence on Chelsea Manager Role After Rosenior's Shock Dismissal

Following Liam Rosenior's dismissal as Chelsea's head coach on Wednesday, rumors quickly emerged about a potential return of Cesc Fàbregas, to which the former Chelsea star-turned-manager has now offered his response.

The 38-year-old Spanish international spent five seasons as a player at Chelsea from 2014–2019 following spells at Arsenal and Barcelona, making 105 appearances and playing a pivotal role in the Blues' midfield. He departed Stamford Bridge having claimed the Premier League title twice (2015, 2017), the Carabao Cup once (2015), and the FA Cup once (2018).

He took the helm at Como in 2023 and has since guided the club to remarkable success through his tactical acumen and leadership skills, including earning promotion to Serie A in 2024 after a 21-year absence. Como finished 10th in Italy's top division last season and currently occupies sixth place, still in contention for a Champions League spot. Como also advanced to the Coppa Italia semifinals this week, though they fell to Inter 3–2.

Como president Mirwan Suwarso was the first to speak out on Friday to address the swirling rumors.

"If that makes him happy, that's him," Suwarso told City AM regarding the potential Premier League move for Fàbregas, who also holds a minority ownership stake in Como. "You want your employees to stay with you for as long as possible, but at the end of the day, we don't own him.

"He's free to go to Chelsea if he wishes."

What Was Cesc Fàbregas's Response?

Fàbregas swiftly dismissed the speculation.

"Nothing to say about that, it'd be stupid to think about that now," Fàbregas said Friday, per Fabrizio Romano. "My focus is on the next game against Genoa."

"I believe I will continue my chapter as Como head coach. Focus on next games," he added.

Rosenior, who signed a nearly six-year contract with Chelsea on Jan. 6., was let go after just 106 days of his 2,001-day deal. The final blow for Rosenior came in the form of Chelsea's embarrassing 3–0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday night, which marked their fifth straight league match without finding the net — a drought the club hasn't endured since 1912.

Interim manager Calum McFarlane will take charge for the rest of the season, as Chelsea returns to action on Sunday in the FA Cup semifinals against Leeds.

With a move for Fàbregas now off the table, other candidates being considered as permanent successors to Rosenior include former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso and current Fulham boss Marco Silva.
