Chalobah's Red Card Triggers Chelsea Meltdown as Brighton Stuns Blues 3-1
Trevoh Chalobah's dismissal in the second period transformed Chelsea's single-goal advantage into a crushing 3–1 home loss against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.
Following a catastrophic opening to their previous Premier League encounter at Manchester United, Chelsea emerged for this fixture with significantly greater poise and appeared set to secure a straightforward triumph. Enzo Fernández was the first to challenge Bart Verbruggen, forcing the Brighton goalkeeper into action with a beautifully executed free kick within the opening three minutes.
Marc Cucurella, assuming the role of antagonist against his previous club, fired narrowly wide shortly thereafter, while Reece James prompted another excellent stop from range as Chelsea maintained relentless pressure during a commanding opening quarter-hour.
The breakthrough arrived after 25 minutes. James's delivery took a cruel deflection and arced over to the far post, where Fernández stood alone to nod home into an unguarded goal.
Brighton did present some danger in the opening period, especially through Yankuba Minteh along the right flank, but the Seagulls provided minimal threat in the final third as Chelsea maintained 70% possession and outshot their rivals 9–0 in a comfortable opening 45 minutes.
The atmosphere shifted dramatically at the beginning of the second period. A James fitness concern in the early stages preceded a dismissal for Chalobah, punished for preventing a clear scoring chance just five minutes after the interval following a wayward touch from Andrey Santos that left his colleague in serious difficulty.
Predictably, Chelsea's grip on the match weakened thereafter. A midfielder and winger were withdrawn for two fresh defenders as Enzo Maresca clearly prioritized preserving a clean sheet, but anxiety levels rose as Danny Welbeck's volleyed attempt sailed wide of the target.
Welbeck found his mark moments later, guiding home a header with 13 minutes remaining to establish a tense finale to the contest.
Brighton saw a late penalty appeal dismissed by VAR and a confrontation involving multiple players from both teams epitomized the tension with which this match concluded. However, Chelsea could not maintain their lead as Maxim De Cuyper nodded past Robert Sánchez in the 92nd minute to complete a turnaround that was sealed by another Welbeck goal deep into added time.
