Champions League Drama: Tottenham Keeper Suffers Nightmare as Michael Olise Dazzles in European Showcase

Igor Tudor's harsh choice to substitute Tottenham Hotspur keeper Antonín Kinský merely 17 minutes into his side's devastating 5–2 loss to Atlético Madrid became the standout moment on the opening night of this season's Champions League last 16 fixtures.

Having apparently lost confidence in regular number one Guglielmo Vicario, Tudor decided to give Kinský just his third appearance of the campaign—following two earlier Carabao Cup outings—and immediately had second thoughts.

Tottenham found themselves trailing by three goals within just 15 minutes, with the young Czech goalkeeper bearing responsibility for two of those strikes. Atlético's opening goal came when Kinský lost his footing while attempting to distribute the ball with his feet, and two passes later Marcos Llorente had thundered it home.

It was Micky van de Ven's stumble that allowed Antoine Griezmann to score Atlético's second in the 14th minute. Approximately 60 seconds afterward, Kinský wished the Metropolitano pitch would open up beneath him after delivering a wayward pass that gifted Julián Alvarez an empty net to target.

In an extraordinary decision that left supporters both in the venue and watching globally utterly stunned, Tudor didn't hesitate to withdraw his goalkeeper. Completely devastated, Kinský walked directly to the changing room, with Dominic Solanke, Conor Gallagher and João Palhinha all rising from the substitutes' bench to follow and comfort their shattered colleague. Atlético supporters respectfully clapped the goalkeeper as he exited, though Tudor showed him no acknowledgment whatsoever.

No one who hasn't been a goalkeeper can understand how difficult it is to play in this position.

Keep your head up and you will go again.

On social platforms, former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea provided Kinský with an encouraging message: "No one who hasn't been a goalkeeper can understand how difficult it is to play this position. Keep your head up and you will go again." Speaking for TNT Sports, ex-Manchester City keeper Joe Hart said "It broke my heart" to witness it and that he was "flabbergasted" by Tudor's response.

Vicario's introduction between the goalposts reduced the scoring frequency but couldn't halt it entirely. The Italian was still beaten just five minutes after being thrust into the chaos, conceding from a rebound header by Atlético defender Robin Le Normand after Vicario had initially produced a fine stop.

Spurs managed to pull one back through fullback Pedro Porro relatively soon, but a second strike of the evening from Alvarez reestablished Atlético's four-goal advantage. The Argentine completed a swift counterattack just 12 seconds after Jan Oblak had thwarted Richarlison at the opposite end.

Atlético Madrid players celebrate

Paradoxically, the goalkeeping mistakes weren't limited to Kinský. During the closing 15 minutes, Oblak delivered a careless pass from his area that was intercepted by Porro and subsequently converted by Solanke, narrowing the aggregate gap to three goals—making the task slightly less daunting for Spurs.

Facing potential relegation in the Premier League, the struggling side will require an almost flawless display in north London next Wednesday to maintain any hope of continuing their European campaign this season.

Bayern Munich Virtually in Quarterfinals Already

If any team has a more secure position in the quarterfinals than Atlético Madrid, it's Bayern Munich. The current German champions netted six against Atalanta in Bergamo, with the Serie A outfit managing only a late consolation that leaves the aggregate difference at five.

Michael Olise showcased the talent that has made him the subject of nine-figure transfer rumors in recent months, netting twice and providing one assist during a remarkable individual performance. His combined total for the season stands at 41 goals and assists across 37 matches in all competitions.

Right-back Josip Stanišić found the net from close quarters after 12 minutes, before Olise struck the bottom corner from 18 yards and Serge Gnabry made it 3–0 within half an hour.

Nicolas Jackson added a fourth following a Bayern breakaway early in the second period, before Olise's second goal—strikingly similar to his opener—extended the Bavarians' lead to five. More than 20 minutes plus added time remained when Jamal Musiala converted a powerful Jackson delivery, with Mario Pašalić's 93rd-minute consolation being the sole blemish of the evening for a Bayern team that achieved all this without Harry Kane—kept on the bench throughout for rest.

St James's Park remained goalless until the 86th minute. However, after Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle United a late advantage, Lamine Yamal's spot-kick in the sixth minute of added time ensured the teams remain level heading into the second leg at Camp Nou.

Barnes, who has registered nine goal contributions in the Champions League this season and is making his case for England's World Cup squad, mishit a volley that barely beat Joan García.

However, a reckless tackle from Malick Thiaw on Dani Olmo was an obvious penalty and Yamal remained composed to prevent Newcastle from securing what would have been a memorable victory.

Mario Lemina

For the second occasion this season, Liverpool suffered defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul. A group stage loss in October sparked momentum for a terrible period of form that the Reds have yet to completely overcome, and a solitary early strike from former Southampton and Fulham midfielder Mario Lemina leaves Arne Slot's side with work ahead in the return fixture at Anfield next week.

Slot won't be pleased with how the goal materialized, stemming from a corner kick that saw Galatasaray claim both the first and second ball in the congested penalty box.

Ibrahima Konaté escaped punishment on the hour when his double error leading to a Victor Osimhen strike was nullified by an offside decision. The Frenchman was involved once more moments later when a potential Liverpool leveler was ruled out following a VAR check that detected the ball hitting the Frenchman's hand as it was scrambled into the goal.
