Champions League Showdowns: Bold Predictions for Matchday 3's Epic Clashes

Four of the eight positions in the 2025–26 Champions League quarterfinals will be determined after what looks set to be an extraordinary night of football throughout Europe.

The majority of Tuesday's matches will take place on English soil, with three Premier League teams seeking victories that could secure their advancement to the next phase. While any positive result will suffice for Arsenal to advance, Chelsea and Manchester City are pursuing equally improbable turnarounds against two European giants.

A disappointing conclusion remains possible, but when has this tournament ever disappointed once it enters the elimination rounds? Drama and excitement worthy of awards recognition are guaranteed.

Here's how Sports Illustrated forecasts Tuesday's return legs will unfold.

Sporting CP vs. Bodø/Glimt

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain weren't the sole clubs that secured convincing wins last Wednesday. Bodø/Glimt delivered another impressive performance in the far north, dismantling Sporting CP with authority.

The Portuguese side simply couldn't cope with the pace of Bodø's passing combinations, displaying the same intuitive understanding that had previously overwhelmed Man City, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan the previous week. A clear difference in quality existed between both teams, and Kjetil Knutsen's squad have demonstrated they can be equally devastating away from their unique home venue.

Their exceptional displays in Dortmund, Madrid and Milan should provide sufficient confidence going into Tuesday's return match in Lisbon. The home team will undoubtedly press forward aggressively, but Bodø, who continue to improve with each new challenge, should possess enough quality to maintain their advantage over Sporting.

Prediction: Sporting CP 1–1 Bodø/Glimt

Arsenal vs. Bayer Leverkusen

Arsenal vs. Bayer Leverkusen

Kai Havertz

Bayer Leverkusen merited a narrow win last week, but were prevented by a disputed penalty call that favored Arsenal.

Kai Havertz's conversion from the spot ensures everything remains open at the Emirates on Tuesday evening, with the Gunners desperately requiring a better performance. They've endured difficulties over recent weeks, honestly, but continue to deliver crucial moments when most needed.

They've been outstanding in this tournament at home under Mikel Arteta, securing 13 victories from their 16 Champions League matches at the Emirates with the Spanish manager in control. Leverkusen, however, triumphed at Manchester City during the group stage, and will likely make this encounter a nerve-wracking affair for most of its length.

It might require another late Arsenal surge for the Gunners to separate themselves from the German club.

Prediction: Arsenal 3–1 Bayer Leverkusen

Chelsea vs. Paris Saint-Germain

A 5–2 loss in Paris was certainly cruel on Chelsea, who played admirably for large portions of the first leg but were eventually undone by another goalkeeper error and Paris Saint-Germain's absolutely incredible offensive prowess.

Following Filip Jörgensen's mistake that handed PSG a 3–2 advantage, João Pedro had a leveling goal disallowed for offside before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted twice as a substitute. His final-minute strike, PSG's fifth of the evening, has likely sealed the tie away from Chelsea.

Another high-scoring encounter appears probable in west London, with the visitors well-prepared having rested over the weekend. There are significantly more weaknesses in their setup compared to the previous season, but the Blues are not in good form.

Liam Rosenior's seemingly revolutionary pressing system has been exploited repeatedly, and PSG are simply too talented in attack not to find the net multiple times at Stamford Bridge.

Prediction: Chelsea 2–2 PSG

Manchester City vs. Real Madrid

Kick-off time: 8 p.m. GMT / 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT

Real Madrid's surprising 3–0 victory in the first leg provided additional evidence of their extraordinary consistency in this tournament. Regardless of how exposed they may seem, Madrid can never be dismissed on a significant Champions League evening.

Manchester City couldn't capitalize on their early control at the Bernabéu and were eventually undone by a brilliant Federico Valverde hat-trick, despite the Uruguayan having to spend considerable time providing defensive support for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It was an exceptional performance from Madrid's skipper, who also scored brilliantly at the weekend, but the away team will probably need to endure difficult spells during Tuesday's match if they're to prevent a remarkable City fightback.

Prediction: Man City 2–1 Real Madrid
