Champions League's Most Dominant Winning Streaks That Shook European Football

The Champions League represents the pinnacle where Europe's finest clubs compete for football's most prestigious trophy. Simply surviving the competition proves challenging enough. Excelling becomes an even greater test.

Only the continent's top-tier clubs hold realistic hopes of Champions League success each year, and there have been some remarkably memorable campaigns since the tournament's transformation in 1992.

Assembling an extended victory sequence deserving of the championship presents the ultimate test, yet several powerhouse teams have undertaken legendary successful runs that seem almost impossible.

With this context, here are the most extended winning sequences in Champions League history.

Bayern Munich clearly holds the most remarkable victory sequence since the Champions League began. An incredible 15-match run lasted over twelve months—though the COVID-19 pandemic certainly extended the duration—beginning in September 2019 with success against Red Star Belgrade and finishing with a comfortable win over RB Salzburg in November 2020.

Throughout their extraordinary dominant period, Bayern captured the 2019–20 Champions League title by defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the final, while also securing their legendary 8–2 victory against Barcelona plus dominant wins over Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Atlético Madrid. The sequence concluded with a draw against Atlético in the 2020–21 group phase.

Bayern also holds the joint-second longest victory run in the tournament—their 10-match sequence between April and November 2013—while they enjoyed another impressive streak shortly after establishing the record, winning eight consecutive matches between September 2022 and March 2023.

Manchester City represents the English club with the longest sequence and they also secured the trophy during their 10-game run, which began with a 4–0 triumph over Real Madrid in the 2022–23 semifinals. City then defeated Inter in the final before winning their opening eight European matches of the subsequent season—finally halted by a quarter-final draw with Madrid in 2024.

Matching Bayern and Man City with 10-game victory runs is Real Madrid, whose sequence started with a 1–0 semifinal triumph over Bayern, continued with success against Atlético in the 2013–14 final and concluded when they were unexpectedly defeated 4–3 at home by Schalke in the next season's round of 16 second leg.

Two nine-match victory sequences have occurred in the Champions League, both achieved by Barcelona. The first dates to 2002 and lasted precisely five months before eventual finalists Juventus ended it in the quarterfinals, while the second occurred during their 2014–15 championship campaign—though it concluded just prior to their final triumph over Juventus in Berlin.

The 1996–97 season witnessed Borussia Dortmund claim their only Champions League title and start their eight-game victory sequence in December of that campaign. This continued into the next season and represents a streak that Arsenal could equal in this year's Champions League if they defeat Kairat Almaty at home in their final league phase fixture.
