Championship Club Axes Record-Breaking MLS Boss After Lightning-Fast 44-Day Reign

West Bromwich Albion have announced the departure of Eric Ramsay following merely 44 days in the managerial position.

The ex-Minnesota United head coach, who was the youngest manager in Major League Soccer history, left behind two Western Conference playoff semifinal appearances to tackle a relegation fight in the English Championship this past January, but couldn't secure a single victory in his nine matches at the helm.

Collecting only four points from a potential 24 in league play, Ramsay couldn't win over an increasingly frustrated supporter base that had been openly demanding his removal during his final two matches. Chants of "Eric Ramsay, your football is s---" rang throughout The Hawthorns in the period before his dismissal.

"The club would like to place on record its thanks to Eric and Dennis [Lawrence, assistant manager] and wishes them well for the future," West Brom said in a short statement confirming his exit.

Expectations were reasonably optimistic for Ramsay when he arrived at West Brom in January. The Welsh coach had built a solid reputation in England, excelling in youth development at Chelsea before spending three seasons as a coach with Manchester United.

His transition to management with Minnesota in 2024 was anticipated, and Ramsay quickly established new club records for points, goals scored, goals allowed, and victories to secure two playoff semifinal appearances.

Ramsay's achievements in MLS obviously attracted attention in Europe, and he returned to the continent in January, one month after 2024 MLS Coach of the Year Wilfried Nancy brought his skills to Scottish powerhouse Celtic.

Nancy lasted only eight matches and 33 days in his role at Celtic, while Ramsay managed 11 additional days with West Brom.

Eric Ramsay

When any club appoints a new manager, that individual faces a crucial decision. Should they attempt to implement their own tactical approach and risk an awkward beginning, or work with the existing squad structure?

Ramsay chose the former option, converting West Brom to the three-at-the-back system he employed in Minnesota despite the Baggies not using that formation for over two years. The adjustment was, unsurprisingly, awkward and was discarded after only four matches, but the harm was already inflicted.

During Ramsay's opening four fixtures, West Brom netted three goals while allowing 12. The choice to shift to a 4-4-2 formation, which produced two consecutive 0–0 stalemates initially, was sensible but left many fans wondering if Ramsay was already desperately seeking solutions as the team drifted nearer to the drop zone.

Team selection choices and match management also failed to win over supporters, who started voicing their displeasure and intensified pressure on Ramsay. His relative lack of experience had already frustrated portions of the fanbase during a period when many believed West Brom required someone with demonstrated Championship success to guide them from peril.

In the end, West Brom required points and wins to ascend the Championship table and simply couldn't provide Ramsay the time he obviously needed to attempt a turnaround. He departs with the club sitting just one point clear of relegation with 12 fixtures remaining.

Upon joining Minnesota, Ramsay maintained that MLS would provide him a more stable platform for growth compared to the Championship. As events unfolded, his assessment proved accurate.
