Chelsea and Liverpool Target Reveals Why He Rejected Summer Moves for 'Something More Important'

Malick Fofana attracted attention from Chelsea and Liverpool during the summer transfer window, but the 20-year-old opted to remain at Lyon where he can secure regular playing time.

The Premier League powerhouses were not shy about spending heavily this summer, with Liverpool and Chelsea at the forefront. The reigning English champions invested £415 million ($560.6 million) to acquire 10 new signings while the Blues spent £282.1 million ($379.7 million) to bring 12 fresh faces to Stamford Bridge.

Fofana, who was connected to both teams throughout the summer transfer period, might have become another addition heading to either Merseyside or west London. However, despite reported interest, neither Liverpool nor Chelsea managed to secure a deal for the talented young winger.

During his time with the Belgium national team, Fofana discussed the potential moves that didn't come to fruition, explaining his decision to remain at Lyon despite the club's temporary relegation to Ligue 2.

"Both clubs showed interest, but in the end it wasn't substantial enough," Fofana explained. "I considered a move, but I believe it's crucial right now that I get plenty of playing time, and that needs to happen at Lyon. I still have areas where I need to develop."

Certainly, Fofana would have faced challenges securing regular minutes at Liverpool or Chelsea considering the caliber of offensive players both teams acquired this summer. It's difficult to envision the Belgian getting steady playing time on a squad featuring players like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitiké, Mohamed Salah and Florian Wirtz.

The situation would be similar at Chelsea, who now have João Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Pedro Neto, Estêvão, Liam Delap and Cole Palmer in their ranks.

In France, however, Fofana is a regular starter in Lyon's lineup. The winger featured in 41 matches across all competitions last season and has already been in the starting eleven for all three of the French club's Ligue 1 fixtures in 2025–26.

With his focus on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Fofana emphasized that he needs to be in a situation that provides him with opportunities to play and develop his skills consistently.

"Absolutely [I want to participate in the 2026 World Cup], but I understand I still have much to demonstrate. I've already shown improvement. I'm now more impactful and more engaged in matches," Fofana stated.
