Chelsea and Man United Suffer Major Setback in Battle for Premier League Star Defender

The prospects of Manchester United or Chelsea acquiring Everton's defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the immediate future seem to have diminished as the England star is reportedly ready to sign a fresh contract extension.

Branthwaite has established himself as among the Premier League's most promising young central defenders, with speculation even linking him to Real Madrid during the previous campaign when ex-Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti was still managing at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Manchester United made several attempts to secure Branthwaite—with their highest offer reaching £50 million ($68.6 million)—all of which were rejected during the summer transfer window. He continued to be associated with the Red Devils due to his growing reputation and future prospects. Chelsea have similarly been seeking a new centre-back amid uncertainty surrounding Wesley Fofana and were rumored to be contemplating a move.

However, a contract renewal with Everton appears to be the likely outcome. The Times reports that Branthwaite is expected to sign a new five-year agreement, including an improved salary package, extending until 2030 that "acknowledges his development".

Branthwaite's existing deal expires in 2027 and negotiations for an extension had previously stalled under the previous ownership. However, following the successful Friedkin Group acquisition, Everton have reportedly adopted a more resolute position and made it evident that parting with the England defender was not an option.

Everton have experienced a revival in recent months. David Moyes' return as manager in January resulted in their strongest Premier League campaign—finishing 13th—in four seasons after facing potential relegation concerns before his appointment. The Scottish tactician had previously delivered regular mid-table positions during his initial tenure and recently guided West Ham United to European glory.

The Merseyside club will also begin the 2025–26 season at their spectacular new venue, the Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore dock, highlighting that this could represent the start of an exciting new era.
