Chelsea and Manchester United are both anticipated to be busy in the upcoming summer transfer window, and a potential bidding war may be developing between the two Premier League heavyweights for the signature of in-demand Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea.
The 24-year-old has put together an impressive campaign in Spain, playing a key role in Real Sociedad's run to claiming the 2025–26 Copa del Rey trophy, during which he netted the fastest goal in the final's 100-plus year history (14 seconds).
His impressive and consistent displays have drawn the attention of both Chelsea and United, who have been monitoring the Spaniard throughout the season, per MARCA.
According to the report, the Premier League rivals have placed Barrenetxea on a shortlist of targets they are evaluating as potential winger additions this summer. The Sociedad academy product isn't widely known, but he could represent a relatively affordable option in an otherwise overcrowded winger market.
With the summer transfer window now open, luring the versatile winger away from La Liga could prove to be shrewd business given his price tag, his age, and the form he has demonstrated this season.
Who is Ander Barrenetxea?

Barrenetxea made his professional debut at just 15 years old for his hometown club Real Sociedad back in December 2018. Since then, he has accumulated over 230 appearances for La Real, gradually developing into a player capable of performing across the entire attacking line, with a particular strength on the left flank.
Throughout his career, he has gained Champions League and Europa League experience, and has established himself as a reliable figure for Real Sociedad in La Liga this decade. However, his 2025–26 campaign has arguably been his finest to date.
Barrenetxea has registered four goals and five assists across 34 appearances this season, with 30 of those coming in La Liga. Only captain and first-choice striker Mikel Oyarzabal has contributed more goals in the league for Sociedad than Barrenetxea, who has also emerged as one of the most dangerous dribblers in Spanish football.
His outstanding performances this season caught the attention of Spain national team head coach Luis de la Fuente, who handed Barrenetxea his international debut during the March international break just under two months ago, when he started a friendly fixture against Egypt.
At 24 years old, Barrenetxea has earned a place in Spain's preliminary World Cup squad, and with Nico Williams battling persistent injury issues and Álex Baena struggling to recapture his best form, he stands a strong chance of making his World Cup debut this summer.
Given his standout season and the prospect of a World Cup appearance, it may be the right moment for Real Sociedad to profit from their prized asset, continuing their long-standing reputation as one of Spain's premier selling clubs.
The Real Sociedad, Premier League Pipeline

It seems as though every summer, top clubs from across Europe look to Real Sociedad to strengthen their squads with the finest talent the Basque club has to offer. In recent years, it has been Premier League powerhouses in particular who have come calling.
Over the past two years, Arsenal have twice raided La Real for talent. First came Mikel Merino in the summer of 2024, and a year on, the Gunners returned for Martín Zubimendi. Arsenal's connection with Real Sociedad is hardly surprising, given that manager Mikel Arteta himself made the move to the Premier League during his playing career, departing Real Sociedad for Everton back in 2005.
Perhaps most famously, Xabi Alonso — widely considered one of, if not the greatest academy product in Real Sociedad's history — departed his boyhood club in 2004 to join Liverpool, where he truly announced himself on the world stage.
Yet Real Sociedad's high-profile departures are not limited to homegrown talent. The club's record sale came in the summer of 2022, when Newcastle United paid $70 million (£60 million) to secure Alexander Isak — who would go on to become the Premier League's record transfer — for English football.
History suggests Sociedad are more than willing to engage in talks when Europe's elite clubs arrive with serious money. Should Chelsea or Manchester United make a genuine move for Barrenetxea, the talented attacker — largely under the radar outside of Spain — could find himself thrust into the limelight at a Premier League giant come 2026–27.
