Chelsea Co-Owner Ready to Offload His Stake as U.S. Investigation Closes In

Chelsea co-owner Mark Walter is reportedly considering selling his stake in the club amid an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office into alleged financial misconduct.

Walter owns a 12.8% stake in Chelsea following his involvement in BlueCo's acquisition of the club in 2022, alongside Hansjörg Wyss, longtime business associate Todd Boehly, and majority shareholders Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano.

He recently completed the sale of NBA franchise the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion—the biggest deal in sports history—and, according to the Wall Street Journal, has signaled a desire to divest his Chelsea stake as his business interests come under scrutiny from U.S. authorities.

Why Is Mark Walter Under Investigation?

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan and the Securities and Exchange Commission are reportedly examining a potential fraud case valued at a staggering $16 billion.

Loans of that magnitude extended to companies connected to Walter or his conglomerate, TWG Global, allegedly ended up on the balance sheets of insurance firms owned by Walter. Such arrangements are required to be disclosed as affiliated transactions to prevent conflicts of interest, but it is alleged that no such disclosures were made in these instances.

"Mark Walter and TWG have always acted in good faith, and those who have done business with Mark know him as honest and straightforward," a TWG spokesperson stated. "Nothing about these transactions was any different."

Affirming its full cooperation with investigators, the group added: "We are confident these matters will be resolved favorably."

What Does This Mean for Chelsea?

Behdad Eghbali, Todd Boehly

Walter is one of the key investors in Chelsea but holds the same 12.8% share as Wyss and Boehly, who has frequently been regarded as the public face of the ownership group despite not holding a majority stake in BlueCo.

Should Walter proceed with selling his share, any incoming investor would still hold the same minority stake in Chelsea, though there remains a possibility that an existing shareholder could seek to acquire Walter's portion.

Even if Wyss or Boehly, who co-owns a stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers with Walter, were to buy his share, they would still hold only a combined 25.6% stake in Chelsea. Majority shareholders Clearlake Capital command a total of 61.54% of the club's shares.

As a result, Clearlake would continue to hold a controlling interest in Chelsea regardless of who acquires Walter's stake, meaning any potential transfer is unlikely to bring about any meaningful change at the club.
