Chelsea Crumble Against Hull: Same Old Problems Haunt Struggling Blues

Chelsea were rescued by their revamped attacking unit once more as Xabi Alonso's men were held to a disappointing 2–2 stalemate against Hull City at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues broke the deadlock inside seven minutes through Morgan Rogers, who slotted into the near post after a clever ball from João Pedro on the edge of the area. However, defensive vulnerabilities—the side's recurring problem this campaign—quickly let Hull back into the contest.

A mistake from Jorrel Hato handed Mohamed Belloumi the opportunity to level, before the Algerian struck again just six minutes later. On this occasion, Emi Martínez failed to deal with a corner, with Semi Ajayi's header rattling the crossbar and Belloumi reacting fastest to convert the rebound.

When the moment called for a hero, Pedro answered. He restored parity for Chelsea in the 66th minute after being set up by Cole Palmer, drilling an unstoppable finish into the net from close range.

That brings Chelsea's revamped front three to 14 combined goal contributions this season, with Pedro on six, Palmer on four and Rogers on four. The trio are rapidly demonstrating they possess the quality and understanding to trouble any backline.

The concern, as has been the case throughout, remains at the back. Chelsea continue to look a threat going forward, but their defensive errors are making things considerably harder than they should be.

The Problem That Won't Go Away

When discussing the "problem that won't go away" at Chelsea, it's tempting to focus on their defensive fragility, with Xabi Alonso's side looking threatening in attack one moment and prone to falling apart at the back the next.

But looking more closely at an issue that has persisted for much longer, there is one position that continues to generate serious concern: the goalkeeper.

Robert Sánchez built an unfortunate reputation for costly blunders during his time at Chelsea, with his performance on the opening day against Fulham seemingly enough to see him offloaded to Como and replaced by Emi Martínez, who joined from Aston Villa and immediately assumed the No. 1 shirt.

As a World Cup winner, Martínez arrived with impressive credentials, yet his displays so far have done little to persuade Chelsea supporters that he represents a genuine improvement on his predecessor. Against Hull, he first fumbled a corner, allowing Ajayi to head the ball against the bar. The rebound dropped to Belloumi, whose deflected shot crept into the net.

Later, Martínez spilled a fairly routine long-range effort directly into the path of Ollie McBurnie, who really ought to have scored. While the Argentine recovered well to make the stop, he should have comfortably held the original shot without any difficulty.

That amounts to seven goals conceded across three matches, and while it remains too early for firm conclusions, the warning signs are becoming increasingly hard to ignore. Chelsea may have changed their goalkeeper, but they have not necessarily resolved the problem that has plagued Stamford Bridge for far too long.

GK: Emi Martínez—6.2: Appeared uncertain throughout. Failed to deal with the cross that led to Hull's second goal, albeit via a deflection, and nearly gifted a goal from a long-range effort he spilled before Ollie McBurnie failed to convert the loose ball.

RB: Malo Gusto—6.7: Handled his defensive duties adequately on the right, but was wasteful in possession when going forward. Failed to complete a single accurate long pass and was off target with his deliveries.

CB: Wesley Fofana—7.6: Commanding both aerially and on the ground, Fofana was also effective in playing the ball forward, completing a total of 14 passes into the final third.

CB: Levi Colwill—6.9: Too slow to close down Belloumi for Hull's second goal—a concerning pattern this season, with Colwill frequently caught ball-watching or, at times, arguing with officials or getting drawn into petty exchanges with opponents rather than focusing on his defensive duties.

LB: Jorrel Hato—6.0: Withdrawn shortly after the interval following a difficult first half at left back, rather than the left wing-back position where he has impressed this term. Misjudged the bounce for Hull's equalizer in what was an inexperienced error.

CDM: Roméo Lavia—6.9: Solid defensively with 10 contributions and attempted to move the ball forward, but struggled to advance it into areas that could genuinely threaten the opposition.

CDM: Reece James—7.3: Not quite at his sharpest in possession, but his delivery from dead-ball situations remained as threatening as ever. Shifted to right back and performed well after Malo Gusto was replaced.

CAM: Cole Palmer—7.7: His run and low cutback for Pedro's equalizer was outstanding. He was somewhat quieter elsewhere, with Hull's players visibly crowding him whenever he received possession.

RW: Pedro Neto—7.3: Neto had been flourishing in his new wing-back role, but looked noticeably less influential when pushed higher up against Hull. He made few mistakes, but offered limited attacking threat, partly due to Hull's disciplined defensive shape leaving him little space to exploit.

ST: João Pedro—8.3: Another goal and assist for Pedro, who now has six goal contributions already this campaign. Chelsea's standout performer on the afternoon.

LW: Morgan Rogers—7.7: Already showing he is worth every penny for the Blues, but squandered a good chance to win it late in the game.
