Chelsea Crumble Against Man Utd: Blues Hit Rock Bottom in Shocking Collapse

Chelsea suffered their fourth straight Premier League loss on Saturday evening, going down 1–0 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues dominated for large stretches of the match but lacked a cutting edge, and Matheus Cunha struck just before the interval with United's sole shot on target of the evening.

Liam Rosenior's men pressed the away side right up until the final whistle but consistently struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities. Ultimately, Cunha's against-the-run-of-play strike was enough for the Red Devils to steal all three points.

This latest uninspiring Chelsea performance could see them slip to eighth in the Premier League table, and should Liverpool take victory on Sunday, the Blues will find themselves seven points adrift of the Champions League spots. With only one win from their last eight Premier League outings, the bottom of the table is beginning to feel uncomfortably close for Rosenior's squad.

The Problem That Won't Go Away

Pedro Neto

João Pedro was absent from Saturday's fixture due to a thigh problem, and Rosenior fielded a front three that had managed just two Premier League goals between them since the new year. When Estêvão limped off with an injury, that tally fell to just one.

Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto have all failed to find the net in the Premier League since Rosenior took charge: Delap's last league goal came in early January, Pedro Neto's most recent top-flight strike dates back to December, and Garnacho's sole Premier League goal for Chelsea was scored all the way back in October.

Deprived of Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martínez and Leny Yoro, Michael Carrick turned to teenager Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui—who have just 16 combined league starts between them this season—to form a makeshift center-back partnership at Stamford Bridge. Even so, Chelsea's forwards were virtually unable to trouble the visitors, and Cole Palmer was equally ineffective.

Central midfielder Enzo Fernández was responsible for more than half of Chelsea's paltry 0.49 xG in the opening 45 minutes. Estêvão, who picked up an injury just after the 10-minute mark and was substituted shortly after, was the only other Chelsea player to register a shot on target in the first half.

With Chelsea's backline having conceded in each of their previous 10 matches heading into Saturday's game, the attack knew it needed to rediscover its form. But without Pedro, Chelsea's front three were completely blunt, and the Blues have now gone four consecutive Premier League games without scoring.

A side that hasn't found the net in nearly six and a half hours of football simply has no realistic hope of securing Champions League football.

Chelsea Player Ratings vs. Man Utd (4-2-3-1)

Cole Palmer

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Robert Sánchez—6.4: Had no chance of keeping out Cunha's winner, which was the only shot on goal he was called upon to deal with all night.

RB: Malo Gusto—7.3: Performed well in the early stages, keeping Cunha in check while also contributing to attacks with energetic overlapping runs. United's goal appeared to knock his confidence, and he struggled to recapture his earlier form.

CB: Wesley Fofana—7.0: A commendable display from Fofana, who handled Benjamin Šeško effectively and went some way to silencing the criticism that has come his way in recent weeks.

CB: Jorrel Hato—6.9: Threw himself into challenges and showed great commitment in protecting his goal, making crucial blocks and well-timed tackles throughout. A composed performance from the young Dutchman.

LB: Marc Cucurella—7.0: Handled Bryan Mbeumo well defensively and posed a consistent threat going forward with powerful runs into the box in the second half.

CM: Moisés Caicedo—6.9: Looked more like his dependable self with his regular midfield partner back beside him. Frequently involved in Chelsea's build-up play and asserted himself in the middle of the park with well-timed interventions.

CM: Enzo Fernández—7.6: Returning from suspension, the Argentine wasted no time in reminding Chelsea of his importance. He worked tirelessly to play incisive passes through the lines and was the driving force behind Chelsea's attacking play.

RW: Estêvão—6.4: Showed early promise before being forced off the pitch inside the first 20 minutes due to injury.

AM: Cole Palmer—6.0: Never appeared at ease in tight spaces. Despite a few neat touches, Palmer once again failed to produce when it mattered most.

LW: Pedro Neto—6.3: Made a rather half-hearted attempt to track Cunha's run for United's goal. After contributing little in attack during the first half, his deliveries into the box from the right flank became Chelsea's primary threat after the interval.

ST: Liam Delap—6.1: Tasked with leading the line in Pedro's absence, Delap was largely invisible with fewer than 10 attempted passes, though he did rattle the crossbar with his only effort on goal.

SUB: Alejandro Garnacho (16' for Estêvão)—6.8: Yet another forgettable outing from the summer signing, who continued to look hesitant and erratic whenever he found himself in promising positions.

SUB: Josh Acheampong (81' for Fofana)—N/A

SUB: Trevoh Chalobah (81' for Gusto)—N/A

SUB: Roméo Lavia (88' for Fernández)—N/A

Subs not used: Teddy Sharman-Lowe (GK), Mamadou Sarr, Tosin Adarabioyo, Dário Essugo, Andrey Santos, Marc Guiu.
