Chelsea Eye Shock Move for Discarded Playmaker—Exclusive Report
Chelsea are reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring Nottingham Forest's attacking midfielder James McAtee, according to recent reports.
McAtee joined the City Ground during the summer transfer window in a deal potentially worth £30 million ($40.6 million), having previously caught the attention of several Premier League sides. However, the 23-year-old has managed only 149 minutes of Premier League football this campaign, with just one league start coming in September's 1–0 loss to Sunderland.
His limited involvement in Forest's lineup, which persisted during Saturday's tight loss to his former team Manchester City, has sparked fresh rumors about his potential departure, with Mail Sport indicating that Chelsea are among five clubs showing renewed interest.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who faces mounting pressure, is reportedly an admirer of McAtee—the pair previously collaborated at City when the Italian served on Pep Guardiola's coaching team—and the Blues remain active in scouting the transfer market for potential "opportunities" despite having depth in attacking midfield positions.
Leeds United, Fulham and Sunderland are also mentioned as potential suitors for McAtee, alongside Bournemouth, who might pursue a loan arrangement as they brace for the likely departure of key striker Antoine Semenyo—expected to join Manchester City in a £65 million deal.
McAtee Struggles to Make Impact Under Three Forest Bosses

Despite being a Forest player for just over four months, McAtee has already served under three different managers.
Nuno Espírito Santo was the manager when City agreed to McAtee's sale in January, but he departed the club in early September following a dramatic dispute with owner Evangelos Marinakis and former Arsenal midfielder Edu Gaspar, who joined as Global Head of Football during the summer.
Ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou took over from Nuno but lasted only eight games before being dismissed by Marinakis, paving the way for current manager Sean Dyche's appointment.
Regardless of who has been at the helm, McAtee's playing opportunities have remained limited. He has appeared as a substitute in only two of Dyche's seven Premier League fixtures, making brief appearances against Brighton and Fulham totaling just 22 minutes combined.
While European competition has offered McAtee more opportunities due to squad rotation, he hasn't completed a full 90 minutes against Sturm Graz, Malmö or Utrecht, and was substituted at halftime against Utrecht as Dyche introduced Elliot Anderson and Ibrahim Sangaré to help find a breakthrough.
Nottingham Forest Manager | McAtee Appearances | McAtee Minutes |
|---|---|---|
Nuno Espírito Santo | 2 | 219 |
Ange Postecoglou | 3 | 162 |
Sean Dyche | 5 | 52 |
