Chelsea Eyes Five Star Keepers to End Goalkeeping Crisis
Chelsea's choice to overlook goalkeeper reinforcements during last summer's transfer window has proven costly.
Filip Jörgensen's latest mistakes in the Champions League round of 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain have intensified scrutiny on Chelsea's shot-stoppers, compounding the series of blunders committed by Robert Sánchez since joining Stamford Bridge.
It's evident the Blues need a world-class goalkeeper to elevate their performance and they will almost certainly bolster their goalkeeping department when the season concludes. While exceptional talents are scarce in the market, numerous viable improvements over Jörgensen and Sánchez remain available.
Here are five keepers Chelsea might consider.
Mike Penders

Might Chelsea already possess the answer to their goalkeeping dilemma?
Mike Penders joined the Blues from Genk in August 2024 and remained on loan with the Belgian club for the following campaign, before moving to Chelsea's affiliated club Strasbourg for this season. The encouraging development is his impressive form in France.
Penders has featured 37 times for the Ligue 1 team after securing the number one spot, developing his abilities across the continent as Strasbourg pursue Conference League success.
Nevertheless, patience is required with Penders. At only 20 years old and still developing, he would probably benefit from another loan spell in 2026–27, or serving as understudy to a more experienced keeper.
Bart Verbruggen

Chelsea have frequently looked to Brighton & Hove Albion when seeking reinforcements. Sánchez was among the less successful acquisitions from the Seagulls, but Marc Cucurella and Moisés Caicedo have become undeniable successes in west London.
The Blues might again look toward the south coast for additions, with Brighton's Bart Verbruggen ranking among Europe's most talented young goalkeepers. At just 23 years old, he's been the club's clear first choice for two seasons and despite occasional errors, he's developed into an excellent keeper.
The Dutch international would represent a clear improvement over Sánchez, recording superior save rates and distribution accuracy compared to the Spanish keeper in this Premier League campaign. Yet he's still developing at Brighton, raising doubts about his readiness for the highest level.
Diogo Costa
Diogo Costa

Diogo Costa has consistently been linked with moves to Europe's elite clubs. The 26-year-old excelled early in his career, rapidly establishing himself as Porto's primary goalkeeper, and will represent Portugal at this summer's World Cup unless injured.
Famous for his penalty-stopping skills and overall shot-stopping talent, Costa seems prepared for the next phase of his career. Clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City have previously expressed interest and Chelsea would be wise to consider him among their summer targets.
Approaching 250 Porto matches and nearly 50 international caps, Costa brings substantial experience and would instantly become Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper.
Mike Maignan
Mike Maignan

Mike Maignan might have been wearing Chelsea colors if circumstances had been different last summer. The Blues were eager to acquire the skilled Milan goalkeeper before the Club World Cup, but their failure to agree terms with the Italian side and Sánchez's improved showing at the tournament prevented any transfer.
Looking back, Chelsea should have shown greater flexibility in pursuing France's number one, who has been consistently outstanding since his breakthrough at Lille. A complete goalkeeper with minimal weaknesses, he possesses every quality needed to succeed in the Premier League.
One significant obstacle for Chelsea is Maignan's contract extension with Milan in January through 2031, though new agreements mean little in today's football given the frequent inclusion of release clauses. If Chelsea pursue Maignan seriously, they could still secure his services.
Gregor Kobel
Gregor Kobel

Gregor Kobel is familiar with Chelsea speculation. Given his outstanding performances for Borussia Dortmund, the Switzerland international has been regularly connected with a Stamford Bridge move alongside potential transfers to other European powerhouses.
Serving as Dortmund's goalkeeper presents unique challenges. The German club's attacking style and high defensive line have frequently left Kobel vulnerable in recent seasons, yet the 28-year-old has consistently excelled for BVB—particularly catching attention with his outstanding performances during the 2023–24 Champions League final run.
It's unsurprising that Kobel has recorded more shutouts than any Bundesliga goalkeeper this season, while also maintaining the league's second-best save percentage. He represents reliability personified.
Kobel would be a costly but exceptional signing capable of elevating Chelsea's defensive unit to unprecedented levels.
