Chelsea Face Bournemouth: Key Predictions, Tactical Battles, and Expected Lineups Revealed

Chelsea Face Bournemouth: Key Predictions, Tactical Battles, and Expected Lineups Revealed

Following a three-week international break, it has felt like an eternity since Chelsea and Bournemouth last featured in Premier League action, with the two sides set to clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea opened the previous gameweek with a miserable Friday night loss at Brentford. Xabi Alonso's injury-hit squad were ultimately overpowered by an impressive Bees side, having failed to make any real impact on the hosts during a lifeless first half.

Consequently, the Blues, already considered long shots for the title following their defeat at Arsenal on Sept. 6, sit in 10th place after failing to win any of their last three matches.

Bournemouth's sluggish start to the domestic season since parting ways with Andoni Iraola and appointing Marco Rose has largely gone unnoticed, yet there appears to be little panic along the south coast. The Cherries are among just three sides yet to win through five matches, and suffered a defeat to their former manager's new club, Liverpool, in an uninspiring outing before the international break.

Their maiden European campaign should be the primary focus this season, but Rose will be eager to shake off this Premier League slump following the break. This squad is far too talented to be languishing near the bottom of the table.

Rose shouldn't be overly focused on Sturm Graz's visit on Thursday, even if it marks the first time the Vitality Stadium will host a European fixture.

It's high time Bournemouth climbed the Premier League standings, with FotMob's data indicating they are among the biggest underperformers in terms of points after five games. They should have accumulated seven, yet have only managed three.

While Chelsea have looked defensively shaky, the Blues are set to welcome back key players who will strengthen Xabi Alonso's setup. They also boast a solid record in this fixture and have proven difficult to contain on home turf. Alonso will already be under pressure if they fall to a home defeat this weekend.

Prediction: Chelsea 3–2 Bournemouth

Some have argued that now would be the perfect opportunity for Alonso to revert to the back four deployed at the start of preseason, particularly with a few key players still unavailable.

However, the Spaniard may not be ready to abandon the back three just yet, and could look to assess the system's effectiveness with a more complete midfield. Chelsea are expected to have both Caicedo and James available this weekend. Caicedo is yet to make a single start for the Blues this season, while skipper James missed the Brentford defeat through injury.

Pedro sat out international duty with a knee problem, and although he has been cleared to play, he may have to settle for a place on the bench initially. Veteran forward Danny Welbeck is ready to step in if needed.

Cole Palmer is expected to start from the beginning, and new arrival Marco Palestra could make his Premier League debut.

Chelsea predicted lineup vs. Bournemouth (3-4-2-1): Martínez; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill; Neto, James, Caicedo, Chavarría; Palmer, Rogers; Welbeck.

Bournemouth received a major setback during the break, with news that Alex Scott, a player linked with Chelsea, will be out for several weeks after picking up a thigh injury while on international duty.

Manager Rose declined to point the finger at England for the injury, and the new Cherries boss should feel reasonably equipped to handle Scott's absence despite a packed fixture schedule this month. Tyler Adams is expected to line up alongside Lewis Cook at Stamford Bridge, though Ryan Christie could be deployed in a deeper midfield position.

Eli Junior Kroupi is also unavailable for the visitors, but Justin Kluivert, Veljko Milosavljević, Amine Adli and Julián Araujo could all return to Rose's squad. David Brooks is also fit despite withdrawing from the Wales camp during the break.

Former Chelsea shot-stopper Đorđe Petrović is set to start in goal for the away side.

Bournemouth predicted lineup vs. Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Petrović; Smith, Hill, Silva, Truffert; Cook, Adams; Rayan, Christie, Tavernier; Evanilson.
