Chelsea Face Brighton: Key Battles, Bold Predictions, and Expected Lineups Revealed

Chelsea Face Brighton: Key Battles, Bold Predictions, and Expected Lineups Revealed

Chelsea host Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge in their first home fixture of the 2026–27 Premier League campaign.

With no European commitments this season, the Blues have already played at home in the Carabao Cup second round, claiming a 2–0 win over League One side Luton Town to book a third-round clash with long-standing rivals Leeds United.

While Chelsea were dealing with lower-league opposition, Brighton were cementing their spot in the Conference League group stage. A commanding 4–0 win over Norwegian outfit Tromso sees the Seagulls enter European football for only the second time in their club's history, following an eighth-place Premier League finish last term.

Brighton kicked off their 2026–27 season with a dominant display against a poor Aston Villa side. Fabian Hürzeler's squad netted four goals within the opening 30 minutes, though they couldn't extend their lead in the second half despite Villa being reduced to ten men following João Gomes's dismissal.

Chelsea wrapped up the Premier League's opening weekend with a 3–2 win away at Fulham, with the club's revamped attacking unit putting on an impressive showing.

The recent head-to-head record is hard to ignore, with Brighton having won each of the last three encounters between these sides. It's little surprise that Chelsea have repeatedly tried to lure away the Seagulls' top performers!

Both coaches will be pleased with how their teams have started the season, with Hürzeler's Brighton looking clinical against Villa. The Seagulls were ferocious in their pressing, a stark contrast to Chelsea's more relaxed out-of-possession approach. Xabi Alonso is comfortable sitting deeper, trusting his trio of attackers to cause damage on the counter.

Chelsea fans are no strangers to this style, having thrived under the likes of José Mourinho and Antonio Conte — both of whom delivered results quickly in West London. Alonso must make a similarly strong impression at the Bridge, and a win over a side that has historically troubled them would further cement his promising start as Chelsea manager.

Prediction: Chelsea 3–1 Brighton

Alonso has confirmed there are no fitness concerns surrounding Levi Colwill or Geovany Quenda, both of whom were left out of Chelsea's midweek squad for the Luton match.

The Chelsea head coach is also optimistic about Moisés Caicedo's return to midfield. The Ecuador international has sat out the first two matches after sustaining a training injury.

Wesley Fofana returns to availability after completing a ban, though Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra's Premier League debuts for the club have been pushed back due to injuries. Palestra, much like Caicedo, was hurt in training before their season opener at Fulham.

Enzo Fernández looks set to remain on the sidelines amid transfer interest from Manchester City. Addressing the Argentine's omission on Thursday, Alonso commented: "We assess individually, collectively, what's the best for the team, for tonight, what was better for other players that were playing, and we take the decision [to leave Fernández out]."

Brighton's injury list remains lengthy and has grown since their emphatic win over Aston Villa last week. Jack Hinshelwood, who bagged a brace in that 4–0 victory, picked up a knock in training ahead of Sunday's match and is expected to miss the visit to Stamford Bridge.

Hürzeler did, however, play down concerns over a prolonged absence.

Brighton are also without first-choice wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh, who had attracted transfer interest from Liverpool before Brighton turned them away. Georginio Rutter is another injury concern, while Evan Ferguson is not expected to return until October due to an ankle problem.

Maxim De Cuyper impressed in an advanced position last time out, and 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas is set to spearhead Brighton's attack after netting the opener in Thursday's 4–0 win over Tromso.

Brighton Predicted Lineup vs. Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Wieffer, Vušković, Dunk, Boscagli; Groß, Ayari; Osman, Gómez, De Cuyper; Kostoulas.
