Chelsea Faces Fresh Pedro Neto Suspension Blow as Champions League Ban Threat Intensifies

Chelsea aims to secure three crucial points to maintain their position in the Premier League's top-five battle when Newcastle United arrives at Stamford Bridge this weekend, though they must do so without key winger Pedro Neto, who will be absent for his second consecutive match due to suspension.

Neto completed a one-match ban against Aston Villa following his dismissal for receiving two yellow cards during Chelsea's encounter with Arsenal on March 1. Nevertheless, the English Football Association (FA) revealed on Friday that Neto has received an additional one-game suspension for "misconduct" related to his red card incident at Emirates Stadium.

"Neto has received a one-match ban and a £70,000 penalty for misconduct that took place after his dismissal in Chelsea's Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Sunday 1 March," the FA stated in their announcement, according to The Athletic.

"It was claimed that the player behaved inappropriately by not departing the field immediately and/or directing offensive language toward the match official(s) after his expulsion in the 70th minute. Neto later accepted the charge brought against him. An independent Regulatory Commission determined these penalties after a hearing, with written explanations for their decision to be released shortly."

Neto will remain unavailable for team selection for another Premier League match, though the 26-year-old's disciplinary issues extend beyond this. He may also be missing three days afterward when Chelsea faces their most significant match of the campaign.

Neto is currently being examined by UEFA following an incident where he shoved a ball boy during Chelsea's 5–2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 first leg. The winger received no immediate punishment and displayed instant regret, even presenting the ballboy with his jersey after the match and expressing contrition in his post-game remarks.

"I want to say sorry to the ball boy. I already had a conversation with him" Neto explained to TNT Sports following the game. "We were behind and in the passion of the match I wanted to retrieve the ball quickly and I gave him a small push. That's not my character. It happened in the intensity of the moment and I want to apologize. I handed him my shirt. I'm truly sorry about it."

His contrition may not be sufficient to protect him however, as UEFA has initiated disciplinary action regarding the incident, which might result in Neto being prohibited from playing in next Tuesday's second leg where Chelsea will attempt to achieve a remarkable turnaround to continue their European campaign.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior was questioned about Neto's midweek incident before the Newcastle match, and the English coach provided a candid assessment.

"I've reviewed the situation now and it appears problematic," Rosenior commented. "I comprehend Pedro's viewpoint. He desires to return the ball to play as swiftly as possible. He wants to succeed for the team. There are proper methods to handle it.

"What impressed me greatly was his decision, and it was his initiative, to apologize immediately. As I mentioned, whether it's a goalkeeper, myself as a manager or a player, we all make errors. It's about growing from those errors and ensuring they don't repeat."

Neto was among Chelsea's top performers in the French capital on Wednesday and a possible suspension could further damage the Blues' chances of achieving the comeback in the return fixture.

Chelsea's wing options are being challenged at this stage of the season and Neto's absence has left Rosenior with limited choices.

Jamie Gittens and Brazilian talent Estêvão have been out for a month managing hamstring problems. Gittens has resumed training and might be ready for selection, though it could be premature for him to start in the lineup.

"Jamie [Gittens] is back participating, which is excellent," Rosenior mentioned on Friday. "[Estêvão] is still somewhat further from return. We want to be cautious with [Estêvão] due to the type of his hamstring problem, we don't want it returning at a critical point in the season. We'll assess his condition for Tuesday's match against PSG."

With both wingers not at full fitness, it's Alejandro Garnacho who appears ready to take Neto's place in the starting eleven. The Argentine has battled for form throughout the season, but he'll be expected to make an impact during what might be the most crucial period of the campaign for the Blues.
