Chelsea are exploring a potential move for Strasbourg midfielder Valentín Barco, who has reportedly already expressed his desire to join the London club this summer.
Although some reports suggest a deal is already in place ahead of the end of the season, Fabrizio Romano has clarified that negotiations are not yet at that stage.
Chelsea are understood to have a keen interest in acquiring Barco when the season concludes and, with both clubs sharing the same ownership group, believe the transfer could be relatively straightforward to finalize. Discussions have already taken place with the Argentine international, who has indicated his willingness to make the move should Chelsea decide to push ahead.
The West London side are now weighing up their options — a process that may be influenced by the ongoing uncertainty around Enzo Fernández — before arriving at a final decision on Barco, though numerous indicators point toward him following his Strasbourg teammate Emmanuel Emegha to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Why Chelsea Want Valentín Barco

Chelsea were long-standing admirers of Barco during his rise through the ranks at Boca Juniors in Argentina. At one stage, it appeared the Blues were on the verge of securing his signature, only for Barco to choose Brighton & Hove Albion instead.
Chelsea's pursuit never truly faded. The chance to bring him to Strasbourg was seized eagerly in 2025, and the path to a full transfer now appears to be open for the first time.
Barco endured a difficult spell in the Premier League with Brighton, managing only seven appearances before heading out on loan. Now 21, he has rediscovered his top form at Strasbourg following a permanent positional shift from left back to central midfield.
A versatile and dynamic player, Barco was among several standout performers under current Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior at Strasbourg. He is composed on the ball and tenacious defensively, while also retaining the ability to slot in at left back when required.
Reports of interest from Bayern Munich have emerged, which is hardly surprising given Barco's impressive performances this campaign. Strasbourg would make any deal extremely challenging for outside clubs, but Chelsea are well-positioned to complete a comparatively smooth transaction with their affiliated side.
Rosenior Promises Transfer Change

The appeal of signing Barco is evident, yet a deal may not sit well with sections of the Chelsea fanbase who have been vocal about the need for greater experience within the squad.
Key left back Marc Cucurella voiced those sentiments publicly, urging the club's ownership to move away from their heavily youth-focused transfer strategy in favor of a more balanced approach that blends high-potential talent with seasoned professionals.
"You'll see," said an enthusiastic Rosenior when recently asked about reports suggesting Chelsea are ready to make such a shift this summer.
"I think in recruitment, for me, the first thing I look at is character, is emotional stability, is calm," he said. "That's something we've spoken about. That's not a reflection on this group now. It's how we improve the group moving forward."
Supporters may need to exercise patience as they wait for that shift in recruitment philosophy to materialize. Barco has only recently reached the 100-game milestone in his career and carries just seven Premier League appearances to his name, but his arrival could be better received if paired with the signing of a more experienced player.
