Chelsea Launch Bold Raid for Barcelona's Breakout Sensation

Chelsea maintained their typical activity levels throughout the 2025 summer transfer period, securing double-digit numbers in both incoming and outgoing player movements. Nevertheless, one potential deal that failed to come to fruition was the pursuit of Barcelona's young midfielder Marc Bernal.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea made contact with Barcelona regarding a potential transfer for the 18-year-old La Masia academy product. It was Bernal who turned down any possible move due to his commitment to remaining at his childhood club.

Chelsea's strategy involved securing Bernal on one of their characteristic extended contracts before sending him on loan to affiliated club Strasbourg to gain additional playing time and complete his recovery process.

Bernal had been sidelined for more than a year following an ACL injury and only made his return during Barcelona's recent commanding 6–0 triumph over Valencia, where he recorded his maiden professional assist.

While Chelsea showed reported interest, no formal bid was ever submitted for Bernal, contrasting with the official offer the Blues made to Barcelona when pursuing another La Masia product, Fermín López.

Beyond Chelsea's interest, Al Nassr also allegedly attempted to secure Bernal's services in recent weeks. The Saudi Pro League operates a specialized transfer window for players under 21 that remained active until September 21. However, Bernal again declined any potential exit from Barcelona.

Despite Bernal's limited appearance record of just four official games for Barcelona, manager Hansi Flick clearly recognizes his capabilities. Before his injury setback, the then 17-year-old Bernal was selected to start Barcelona's opening three fixtures of the 2024–25 campaign.

With his return to full fitness and considering recent reports of Gavi facing an extended injury absence, Bernal may find his responsibilities expanding as the season progresses.
