Chelsea Players Rally Behind Preferred Manager Choice As Talks Take Promising Turn

The Chelsea playing squad views Xabi Alonso as the ideal manager to elevate the club to greater heights, according to a new report, with the Blues actively pursuing their top target.

Following the ill-fated appointment of Liam Rosenior, Chelsea have been on the hunt for a top-tier manager to finally transform their troubled project into something worthwhile. Alonso is on a shortlist that is also thought to feature Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola and Fulham's Marco Silva, among other candidates.

According to The Guardian, Alonso is the clear favourite among the players. Many within the dressing room have been vocal about wanting a manager with a strong pedigree, and Alonso — who claimed the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen following a distinguished playing career at Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich — ticks every box.

That view is echoed in the boardroom. The Times reports that constructive talks have taken place with Alonso, who is seeking clarity on his role and the level of involvement from sporting directors and club ownership before committing to any decision.

A deal is far from finalised, but progress is being made and there is growing confidence that Alonso will be appointed as Chelsea's next head coach.

The Obstacles Standing Between Alonso and Chelsea

It is no secret that Chelsea's standing has suffered considerably under the BlueCo ownership group, whose costly and controversial approach to running the club has fallen well short of expectations.

With the Blues looking increasingly likely to miss out on Champions League football and amid a narrative that the club's hierarchy is difficult to work alongside, speculation has emerged that managers may want to steer clear of Stamford Bridge — though The Athletic's David Ornstein firmly dismissed such claims as "nonsense."

Interest in the Chelsea role remains genuine, but Alonso is reportedly seeking guarantees from club leadership regarding what he can expect should he take charge.

Among Alonso's key concerns is having a say in player recruitment. Chelsea currently operate under a data-focused model overseen by co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, recruitment leads Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

Alonso is reportedly pushing for greater influence over transfer decisions, and Chelsea officials are said to be willing to accommodate that request. It has been emphasised that there would be "zero desire" to force players upon the former midfield maestro.
