Chelsea caretaker boss Calum McFarlane has suggested that both Reece James and the long-absent Levi Colwill could be available as early as Monday's Premier League encounter against Nottingham Forest.
The Blues have been missing their influential captain James since he suffered a hamstring injury in mid-March. The adaptable fullback has sat out the club's last four Premier League games, all of which ended in defeat as Liam Rosenior was relieved of his duties.
Colwill has been sidelined for an even lengthier spell. The dominant center back missed just three Premier League games last season while establishing himself as Enzo Maresca's preferred defensive leader. Colwill maintained that form through last summer's Club World Cup, which Chelsea claimed, before suffering a torn ACL during the opening week of preseason preparations.
The 23-year-old has not played since that victorious final against Paris Saint-Germain in July but is targeting a significant comeback.
Injury Updates for Reece James, Levi Colwill

"We've got Reece [James] back in training, Levi [Colwill] is back in training, both looking good," McFarlane told reporters on Friday, three days before Chelsea welcome Nottingham Forest in an unusually early kickoff on Monday. "A little bit away to the game, so we'll see how they do day by day, but both are looking promising."
When asked whether both players could feature against the Europa League semifinalists, McFarlane explained: "We're taking it day by day, and obviously Levi's had a long injury.
"Reece had a really good run and has been injured again, and there's a lot of games still to play, so we don't want to push too much, but we're just taking it day by day and see, hopefully, they come through."
The potential return of two of the squad's finest defenders brings optimism for a strong finish to a campaign that has been hampered by a porous backline. Chelsea's total of 45 goals conceded matches that of their upcoming opponents, 16th-placed Nottingham Forest. This is not solely a matter of Robert Sánchez struggling in goal; Chelsea have allowed the 14th-most shots on target across the entire league, surpassing even relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur.
McFarlane Takes Realistic View of Champions League Race

McFarlane has been eager to emphasize the positive atmosphere at Chelsea in recent days. Securing a place in the FA Cup final has certainly lifted spirits, a mood further boosted by the imminent return of two England internationals. Enzo Fernández was even able to visit his beloved city of Madrid during the recent break granted by the interim manager.
However, the club's Premier League standing is far less encouraging. McFarlane inherited a side that has dropped to eighth in the standings, 10 points behind the top five with just four matches remaining in the season.
While he kept alive the notion that Champions League qualification remained achievable, the inexperienced manager admitted that he has largely set aside thoughts of that competition.
"We just have to win our games and not worry about anything else," McFarlane wisely noted. "I think even further to that, we have to make sure our performance levels are right and the results will come. We have to just focus on ourselves and the next game and the next day and the next training session."
