Chelsea Reports Shocking Racist Abuse Incident to UEFA Following Youth League Match

Chelsea have notified UEFA regarding alleged racist incidents targeting "several" of their players during Wednesday's Youth League fixture against Qarabağ in Azerbaijan.

Prior to the senior teams' encounter at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium in Baku, the youth squads clashed across the city at the Azersun Arena. Chelsea secured a commanding 5–0 victory, with Sol Gordon, Jesse Derry (2), Shumaira Mheuka and Frankie Ruhman finding the net.

The scoring remained locked at 0-0 until nearly sixty minutes had elapsed, but Gordon's celebration near a section of local supporters apparently caused offense. Reports suggest monkey-like gestures were subsequently made toward Chelsea players, prompting the referee to temporarily suspend play after being informed. The young Blues continued the contest and netted four additional unanswered goals.

Derry subsequently received a yellow card for his celebration in front of the home crowd.

A widely circulated Chelsea statement declared: "We are cognizant of an occurrence during today's UEFA Youth League fixture in Azerbaijan where, following a goal, several of our players experienced racist behavior from a spectator in the stands.

"Racism and all types of discriminatory conduct are entirely unacceptable and have no place in football or society at large. We firmly denounce the actions of the responsible individual.

"Our players receive complete backing from everyone at the club, and we have immediately brought this incident to the attention of the UEFA match delegate and host club: We anticipate this matter will be thoroughly examined under UEFA's disciplinary framework.

"We take pride in how our players and staff handled the incident on the field, promptly alerting the referee, and praise those who managed the situation professionally and appropriately following UEFA guidelines."

In reply, a Qarabağ representative conveyed regret and astonishment regarding the incident. It remains to be determined how UEFA will proceed, which will depend on the referee's official report.
