Manchester City have intensified their efforts to sign Enzo Fernández after reaching a personal terms agreement with the midfielder, while Chelsea have already begun scouting his potential successor, reports suggest.
The 25-year-old's situation has been a major talking point throughout the summer, with early speculation linking him to Real Madrid—swiftly ruled out by the Spanish club—and a reunion with former boss Enzo Maresca now appearing increasingly likely.
City have lost midfielders Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, and Nico González this summer, with only Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi brought in as reinforcements so far.
Maresca is keen to bolster his midfield options ahead of the Sept. 1 transfer deadline, and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that City are preparing to open formal talks with Chelsea regarding a potential move.
Fernández has reportedly reached a "verbal agreement" with the interested club, though any transfer will ultimately depend on Chelsea's valuation. The London side had set a price tag of $162 million (£120 million) earlier in the window alongside an Aug. 14 deadline, and may now demand an even higher fee given that date has passed.
The Argentine international was left out of Chelsea's matchday squad for Thursday's Carabao Cup second-round win against Luton Town, with manager Xabi Alonso declining to address his future when speaking after the final whistle.
Chelsea Identify Fernandez Successor
Should Fernández depart in the near future, Chelsea are reportedly eyeing Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara as his replacement, according to Romano.
The Blues have "made contact" with the player's camp, and the 22-year-old is said to be receptive to a move. Chelsea have also held direct conversations with Monaco, though they are currently waiting to see how the situation develops.
Camara has been in impressive form over the past couple of seasons in France, racking up 74 appearances across all competitions for Monaco and contributing 17 goals and assists combined.
Following a standout campaign in Ligue 1, he was included in Senegal's squad for the 2026 World Cup, featuring in four matches and bringing his overall international cap tally to 37 since his debut in January 2023.
Camara has built a reputation as a well-rounded central midfielder, drawing particular praise for his defensive awareness and ability to retain possession under pressure. He could be a strong like-for-like option for Fernández, despite being less focused on attacking play.
Crystal Palace had expressed strong interest in Camara earlier this summer and saw a bid exceeding $47.4 million (£35 million) turned down, according to BBC Sport. Chelsea would likely need to exceed that offer from their London rivals to secure his signature.
