Reece James is reportedly set to return for Chelsea at the beginning of May, with the club captain potentially playing a pivotal role in several high-stakes matches as the Blues push for a Champions League spot.
James had gone over a year without suffering a hamstring problem. Working within a carefully managed schedule based on detailed fitness data gathered during training, the England international was fit for all 24 of Chelsea's opening Premier League games.
However, the heavy festive fixture list eventually caught up with him. James managed to overcome a minor hip complaint before his troublesome hamstrings flared up again in mid-March. Early reports indicated the 25-year-old could be out for up to two months, briefly raising doubts over his participation at the World Cup.
It is now being reported that James will return in May, according to The Guardian. Chelsea still have four matches to get through before the end of April, with both Manchester City and Manchester United due to visit Stamford Bridge within the next fortnight.
The Blues head to Brighton in the league before facing Leeds United in the FA Cup semifinal at Wembley Stadium on April 25. The high-profile fixtures continue into May.
The Chelsea Games Reece James Could Return For

Chelsea's pursuit of Champions League football appears to be shaping up as a head-to-head battle with Liverpool. The reigning top-flight champions sit just a single point ahead of the Blues, despite Liam Rosenior's side heading into the international break in poor form. Liverpool also face the distraction of Champions League commitments, though if Paris Saint-Germain reproduce their displays against Chelsea, that run may be short-lived.
One of James's first appearances upon returning could be a pivotal encounter with Liverpool at Anfield on May 9. Chelsea have won just one of their last seven visits to the red side of Merseyside — a 1–0 result played behind closed doors during the COVID-19-affected 2020–21 season. The last time Chelsea claimed a Premier League victory at Anfield with fans in attendance, James had not yet finished school, let alone embarked on his professional career.
There is also the matter of a fiery London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea have already shown that beating Spurs is motivation enough, but the added possibility of contributing to the north London club's relegation makes this an even more compelling prospect. Having James fit and available will only strengthen Chelsea's hand.
The same applies to a potential FA Cup final. However, Chelsea must first find a way past Leeds United without James — which is far from guaranteed. The Yorkshire side took four points from their two Premier League meetings with the London club this season, both of which James missed through injury.
Should Rosenior navigate past the promoted relegation candidates, he will face either Manchester City or Southampton in the FA Cup final.
