Chelsea have had to think outside the box in their pursuit of a new defensive addition, with reports confirming a deal has been struck to sign Atalanta center back Honest Ahanor and subsequently send him on loan to Crystal Palace.
As Fabrizio Romano broke the news of Ahanor's impending loan move to Palace, many observers were quick to note that Chelsea had already dispatched another defender, Axel Disasi, to Selhurst Park this summer. Premier League regulations prohibit any club from having more than one loanee from the same team at any given time, leading some to suggest that Disasi's loan arrangement would need to be terminated.
That will not be the case, however, as Disasi is set to line up alongside the 18-year-old Ahanor for the rest of the upcoming campaign once the transfer is finalized.
How Can Chelsea Send Ahanor to Crystal Palace?
With Disasi already stationed on loan at Palace, the Eagles are barred from taking on a second Chelsea player on a temporary basis simultaneously. It is precisely this regulation that the Blues have had to navigate around.
The key detail is that Palace's loan agreement for Ahanor is directly with Atalanta. The young defender will head to Selhurst Park for the duration of the 2026–27 season under a deal that, technically, does not involve Chelsea at all.
Chelsea's arrangement to purchase Ahanor for $54 million (£40 million) is actually set for the summer of 2027, after his loan spell at Palace has concluded.
Atalanta have, nonetheless, handed Chelsea immediate authority over Ahanor's future, which is the reason the youngster has been cleared for a move to the Premier League this summer.
Why Chelsea Are Signing Ahanor
While this summer has seen Chelsea shift away from their previous habit of stockpiling young talent—with the arrivals of Jordan Henderson (36), Danny Welbeck (35) and Emiliano Martínez (33) significantly raising the squad's average age—the signing of Ahanor marks a return to their much-debated recruitment strategy of recent transfer windows.
Ahanor, a natural center back who is equally adept on the left side of defense, is held in extremely high regard and enjoyed a standout breakthrough campaign last season with Atalanta, racking up 22 Serie A appearances and starting 15 of those matches.
Several top clubs had their eyes on Ahanor, but Chelsea moved swiftly to secure a deal they believe could prove to be exceptional value. Left-footed young center backs are a rare commodity in today's market, and Chelsea are hopeful they have unearthed the next elite defender.
Ahanor is a quintessential modern defender who relishes the physical, combative aspects of the game just as much as a well-timed forward pass. His innate athleticism and significant potential for development—both tactically and physically—have led numerous scouts to predict a stellar future for him, and Chelsea clearly share that view.
The defensive department remains a long-term priority for Chelsea, who appear settled going forward but continue to search for a reliable back line. The Blues are accumulating talent in the hope of uncovering the defensive equivalents of Cole Palmer or João Pedro.
Ahanor will become the third left-footed center back in a squad that already features Jorrel Hato and Levi Colwill. Promising youngsters such as Josh Acheampong, Aarón Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr are all competing for a place in the club's long-term plans, alongside established figures Wesley Fofana and new recruit Maxence Lacroix, who has made an encouraging impression at Stamford Bridge since his arrival from Palace.
Tosin Adarabioyo, the 28-year-old who had previously been Chelsea's oldest outfield player, is anticipated to depart before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
