Chelsea Star Cole Palmer's Comeback Timeline Revealed by Liam Rosenior

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has disclosed that a "slight" injury caused Cole Palmer to be absent from Wednesday evening's Champions League victory against Pafos and expressed optimism about his quick comeback.

The Blues controlled the match against the Cyprus-based opponents at Stamford Bridge but struggled to find the decisive touch until Moisés Caicedo's first-ever headed goal in his professional career delivered a tight victory.

Despite significant squad rotation in the starting lineup that saw Rosenior implement six alterations from the team that kicked off against Brentford in last weekend's Premier League fixture, Palmer was completely absent from the extended matchday roster.

Palmer had completed the entire 90 minutes against Brentford after apparently bouncing back from the minor thigh problem that sidelined him for previous encounters with Charlton Athletic and Arsenal. However, that issue resurfaced during the victory over the Bees and Rosenior decided against taking any risks.

"A slight bit of tension in his thigh," was Rosenior's description of the circumstances before kickoff. Following the match, he stated that keeping Palmer out was "preventative" and not a significant worry.

"He experienced something quite minimal during the Brentford match, early on, so praise to him for persevering through it," the manager elaborated. "I don't want to gamble with any players. He has an excellent opportunity to feature on Sunday [against Crystal Palace]."

It has been a challenging campaign for Chelsea's star player, who accumulated 74 goals and assists in 100 matches during his initial two seasons at the club.

A groin problem was responsible for an extended period of intermittent absence from September through November, followed by a fractured toe and then the persistent thigh concern that continues to trouble him.

Since his return to action in early December, Palmer has achieved nine consecutive Premier League starts and found the net three times. However, due to his restricted appearances—only 13 out of a potential 34 across all tournaments—his production for the season stands at merely five goals.

Chelsea skipper Reece James began in the midfield position against Pafos but was absent for the second period. It was initially assumed to be a strategic decision by Rosenior, with Estêvão being the selected substitute and providing considerably more attacking creativity potential.

However, Rosenior's reasoning centered on workload management for a player who has endured severe injury problems in recent years and has already surpassed 20 Premier League appearances for the first time in one season since 2021–22.

"It was regarding playing time and ensuring he's ready for our Wednesday-Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday schedule," Rosenior explained. "I want him available as frequently as possible. He's a captain in our squad."
