Chelsea vs Liverpool: Who Desperately Needs Lamine Camara More?

Chelsea made a late move to secure the 22-year-old midfielder as a replacement for Enzo Fernández, but Monaco's last-minute decision to pull the plug on the deal postponed what appeared to be an inevitable transfer to one of Europe's top clubs.

Camara's displays for Monaco and Senegal have earned him a lengthy list of admirers, and Chelsea are widely expected to reignite their pursuit when the January transfer window opens. However, they won't be the only club circling.

Liverpool have been identified as a potential rival for the youngster's signature ahead of the winter window, with Andoni Iraola's unbalanced midfield creating problems early in the Spaniard's tenure.

A fierce battle could unfold as the two Premier League heavyweights compete for midfield reinforcements, but which club has the greater need for Camara?

Why Chelsea Desperately Need Camara

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea are likely to be first in line for Camara once the January window swings open. Their interest is driven not just by the player's quality and ceiling, but also by their own shortage of options in the middle of the park.

Fernández's late summer exit leaves Chelsea with just four natural midfielders at their disposal. Moisés Caicedo remains their standout name, and his early-season injury absence under Xabi Alonso has underscored just how heavily the Blues depend on him.

Roméo Lavia is another option in the squad, but the Belgian's persistent injury problems mean Chelsea cannot afford to count on him consistently. That leaves only 36-year-old Jordan Henderson and the relatively raw Valentín Barco.

While right backs Reece James and Malo Gusto have been deployed in central midfield, they remain far from natural fits in that role. Furthermore, both will be needed across a fluid defensive setup as Alonso rotates between 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-2-1 systems.

Chelsea require more depth in central areas, particularly players who can be relied upon to perform regularly at the highest level. Camara fits that profile, having made 78 appearances for Monaco since his arrival in 2024.

Camara would serve as vital cover for Caicedo thanks to his defensive intelligence and tireless work rate, while also being capable of playing alongside the Ecuadorian. He has proven himself an effective attacking contributor for both club and country, standing out for his precise passing, ability to retain possession under pressure, and occasional goal contributions.

Why Liverpool Desperately Need Camara

Liverpool's underperforming midfield is a familiar story. It was a persistent problem throughout last season under Arne Slot and continues to be a headache for Iraola as he looks to implement his high-pressing style at the club.

Much like Chelsea, Liverpool are thin on numbers in midfield. Following Curtis Jones' move to Inter Milan over the summer, Iraola also has just four senior midfield options at his disposal.

Wataru Endō can realistically only be considered emergency cover, leaving Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch — along with promising youngster Trey Nyoni — to shoulder the burden as Liverpool compete across the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup competitions.

Crucially, unlike Chelsea who have Caicedo as a specialist anchor, Liverpool currently lack a dedicated defensive midfielder.

Gravenberch was redeployed as a No. 6 under Slot and initially excelled in the position, but he still falls short in terms of defensive awareness — and current form — when it comes to reliably shielding the back four. Mac Allister has shown renewed energy early in the season but remains better suited to a No. 8 role, while Szoboszlai is most effective in more advanced areas.

Camara, who ranked ninth for defensive contributions per 90 in Ligue 1 last season, would bring something genuinely different to Liverpool, granting the club's other midfielders greater freedom to contribute going forward.

Who Need Camara Most: Chelsea or Liverpool?

To be clear: both Chelsea and Liverpool would benefit enormously from bringing Camara in during January.

As one of the most exciting and value-for-money midfielders currently available, his defensive instincts and technical ability would strengthen either side — particularly if they harbour serious ambitions of lifting trophies this season.

That said, Liverpool may just have the greater need.

While Chelsea's leaky midfield has raised concerns early in Alonso's tenure, the expected return of Caicedo to full fitness should spark a noticeable improvement in their performances. The 24-year-old makes an enormous impact when fit, neutralising threats and providing a seamless link between defence and attack.

Liverpool, however, currently lack a genuine No. 6, and their midfield will continue to struggle without a new signing. They have looked worryingly exposed in central areas under Iraola and are only one or two injuries away from a real crisis.

Bringing Camara into the fold would give them a meaningful advantage going forward, particularly as their squad comes under increasing strain later in the campaign due to their European commitments.
