Chelsea Zero In on Top Target to Take Over from Enzo Maresca

Chelsea have pinpointed Strasbourg's Liam Rosenior as their top choice to succeed manager Enzo Maresca, according to recent reports.

Maresca departed Chelsea on Thursday following a dramatic deterioration in his relationship with the club hierarchy, which led him to conclude he could no longer remain in his role, marking a shocking conclusion to a turbulent month filled with rumors.

Sources indicate Chelsea are seeking to avoid a prolonged replacement process and instead intend to evaluate a limited pool of candidates within a brief timeframe, aiming to restore stability as quickly as possible.

Leading the shortlist, as reported by The Telegraph, is Rosenior from Strasbourg, the French club that is also under BlueCo ownership.

Rosenior initially gained recognition at Hull City before joining Strasbourg in summer 2024, delivering impressive performances in his debut campaign and rejecting Premier League opportunities to commit to a new contract.

Having already adapted to the club's divisive approach, Rosenior enjoys strong support within BlueCo and could potentially make an immediate transition to Stamford Bridge, though it remains uncertain whether negotiations can conclude before Sunday's clash with Manchester City.

While Maresca clashed with senior management over various matters, including transfer policy and strategic approaches, reports also emerged suggesting he was being courted by Manchester City as a possible successor to Pep Guardiola, who may leave his position at season's end.

As reported by The Athletic, Maresca participated in three separate discussion rounds with City throughout this campaign. His contract contained a provision requiring him to notify Chelsea of any communication with rival clubs.

Maresca initially disclosed City's approach in late October and updated the club on two subsequent occasions, while he also confirmed mid-December conversations with the Etihad side, coinciding with when his disputes with Chelsea's structure became public knowledge.

The scheduling of Maresca's exit, occurring just three days before facing City, may seem coincidental but will certainly add an extra dimension of interest to this already captivating encounter.
