Chelsea's €100 Million Blunder: How the Blues Let a Premier League Rival's Dream Target Slip Away
RB Leipzig's talented winger Yan Diomande has revealed he rejected a proposal from Chelsea in 2024 to follow a different route, which has now placed him among Europe's most sought-after prospects.
Arsenal and Liverpool are part of the Premier League powerhouses pursuing Diomande, who represents a primary objective for Bayern Munich and carries a valuation approaching €100 million (£87 million, $118.7 million) following his impressive breakthrough campaign at Leipzig.
The 19-year-old is currently regarded as one of the most promising young wingers in football, and Chelsea nearly secured his signature after bringing Diomande for trials when he was 17 and still a relatively unknown prospect at Florida's DME Academy.
"It was a challenging period," Diomande shared with BILD. "I sensed that for numerous people it was solely about financial gain.

"Numerous individuals insisted I absolutely needed to join Chelsea. Then I halted everything and made my own choice. I was acquainted with Leganés' president; he had assisted with my transfer to America. Suddenly I faced an option: Leganés or Chelsea? It was a gamble, but fortunately the correct choice.
"I believe patience is essential in football. It's not solely about financial rewards. If you perform well, success will follow naturally. I'm still young, I require playing time to enhance my market value and develop. And I wouldn't achieve that sitting on the substitutes' bench."
In an earlier conversation with RBLive, Diomande claimed his representative undermined the transfer by requesting excessive compensation following trials with Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Rangers. Reports also mention Bournemouth as another club that evaluated Diomande during trials.

Chelsea's talent acquisition and scouting operations have faced considerable scrutiny in recent seasons, but those who sought a deal with Diomande clearly demonstrated excellent judgment.
He was an unrecognized prospect at that time but was about to breakthrough, impressing in Spain with Leganés just months after declining Chelsea's proposal. Following six months of first-team experience, he secured a move to Leipzig for €20 million.
This represents precisely the type of transaction Chelsea have been attempting to complete under BlueCo ownership. The strategy involves identifying the £100 million-valued player before they actually reach that price point, and undoubtedly Diomande would have cost significantly less if Chelsea had secured his services in 2024.
Now, Diomande is anticipated to demand a substantial transfer sum next summer, when Chelsea are expected to enter the market for attacking reinforcements. The Blues are very unlikely to enter the competition for their former target, however, since the deal's cost doesn't match their recruitment philosophy.
During a period when many supporters are criticizing the ownership's transfer approach, Chelsea's leadership would have been delighted to showcase Diomande as a triumph.

To consider that Diomande was competing in academy football in America as recently as 2024 is remarkable.
The Ivory Coast attacker has quickly validated his promise, making an impact in Spain before excelling in Germany with Leipzig, who already confront a challenge to retain Diomande beyond one campaign.
Virtually every club seeking an elite forward has been connected with Diomande. As typical with Bundesliga stars, Bayern Munich have already expressed their desire to retain the young winger within Germany's premier division, but they face competition from the financial power of Premier League giants.
Arsenal and Liverpool have maintained the strongest connections to Diomande, who is also recognized as a target for Tottenham Hotspur, a side eager to recover following two disappointing domestic seasons. Manchester United have also been mentioned but are expected to focus their resources on other squad areas, particularly the midfield.
It's possible that Chelsea could participate in Diomande's next transfer, clearly aware and respectful of his abilities, but doing so would demand a significant change in their controversial transfer approach due to the enormous expenses.
Red Bull executive Oliver Mintzlaff recently stated that an offer of €90 million would be insufficient to persuade Leipzig to part with Diomande this summer, indicating that interested parties will need to make substantial financial commitments to acquire the winger.
"He's in charge!" Diomande chuckled! "And there are always multiple parties involved in a transfer—clubs, representatives, family, players. So I don't make these choices independently.
"One thing I can guarantee: I'll never dispute with my club! Naturally, I likely won't end my career here. When the moment arrives, we'll discuss it. But if I remain here this summer, I'll be completely content."
