Cherki and Haaland Ignite Title Race Chaos as Man City Stun Arsenal

Manchester City strengthened their Premier League title bid with a victory over table-toppers Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Erling Haaland's 65th-minute strike secured a 2–1 triumph for Pep Guardiola's side, trimming the deficit to the leaders to just three points. City's match in hand—scheduled against Crystal Palace on May 22—could now make them the frontrunners in many people's estimations. They could climb to the summit even sooner, with a trip to Burnley on Wednesday evening. Arsenal simply cannot afford any more dropped points.

The opening 20 minutes delivered both the spectacular and the chaotic, as Rayan Cherki and Kai Havertz found the net at opposite ends.

Arsenal didn't travel to Manchester to sit back, and did a commendable job of pressing the home side aggressively in the early stages. That high press was precisely the source of Havertz's leveler.

Much to the frustration of those in sky blue, City had held their lead for barely 100 seconds. Just moments before, Cherki had weaved through Arsenal's backline to break the deadlock after 16 minutes as Guardiola's men sought to assert their dominance on this pivotal occasion.

From there, it felt like two elite teams canceling each other out at every turn. City applied pressure early in the second half, before Arsenal had their spell and Eberechi Eze rattled the woodwork.

Haaland fired past David Raya midway through the second period, after which Gabriel struck the post via a deflection off Nico O'Reilly, but it proved sufficient for City, who managed the game well and held on for the three points.

One Thing We Can't Ignore

Gabriel, Erling Haaland

The personal duel between Erling Haaland and Gabriel was always set to play a decisive role in this fixture, and it certainly lived up to expectations. This was a clash between two exceptional players—both remarkable physical forces—going head-to-head for the full 90 minutes.

Whoever emerged victorious in that battle was likely going to deliver the result for their team.

Full credit to Haaland, as this was his moment. The Norwegian, who can sometimes appear peripheral until the ball enters the box, didn't shirk his responsibilities here.

When the chance to net the winner arrived, Haaland crucially had the physicality to hold Gabriel at bay, keeping the centre-back at arm's length just long enough to slot the ball home.

Haaland was all smiles by the final whistle, given that Gabriel arguably should have been dismissed. Yet another physical confrontation saw both players drag each other to the ground. Haaland, having had his shirt ripped by the Brazilian minutes prior, responded by pushing his opponent, who reacted furiously. The pair went head-to-head, literally forehead to forehead, but it was Gabriel who made the aggressive lunge forward and was fortunate to escape with only a yellow card.

Man City Player Ratings vs. Arsenal (4-2-3-1)

Rayan Cherki scores vs. Arsenal

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Gianluigi Donnarumma—6.0: Took too long in possession as Havertz closed him down, failing to read the threat. Redeemed himself around the hour mark with a crucial one-on-one stop.

RB: Matheus Nunes—7.6: Picks up the assist for the Cherki goal, even though the Frenchman did the heavy lifting. Still, put in a solid all-round display.

CB: Abdukodir Khusanov—7.7: A year removed from a difficult debut campaign, the history-making Uzbekistan international looks completely settled.

CB: Marc Guéhi—7.2: Provided consistent defensive cover for O'Reilly throughout. Booked.

LB: Nico O'Reilly—7.9: Impressively composed in possession, even when pressed in his own half. Had a significant hand in the go-ahead goal midway through the second period.

CM: Rodri—7.4: Unassuming in many respects, but this was him operating at his quietly effective best.

CM: Bernardo Silva—7.2: Just days after his summer exit was confirmed, he led from the front. Covered enormous ground and was reliable in possession. Made a crucial defensive intervention with just over 10 minutes remaining to prevent Havertz from going clean through on Donnarumma.

RM: Antoine Semenyo—6.7: Luck wasn't on his side—a slip at a key moment in the first half, a heavy touch in the second. His best opening was blocked by Piero Hincapié.

AM: Rayan Cherki—8.3: At just 22 years old, he is world class and fully aware of it. That iconic celebration—standing still, soaking in the crowd's adoration after scoring a breathtaking opener—speaks volumes about the well-founded self-belief that fuels this young talent.

LM: Jérémy Doku—7.5: City supporters likely wanted more of the Belgian, as he was a threat whenever he got on the ball.

ST: Erling Haaland—8.4: Engaged in a fierce physical contest with Gabriel, who literally tore the shirt from the striker's back at one point. Clearly living rent-free in the Brazilian's head by the final whistle.

SUB: Phil Foden (85' for Cherki)—N/A: A brief cameo at the death is far from the role he desires.

SUB: Nico González (88' for Rodri)—N/A

SUB: Savinho (88' for Doku)—N/A

SUB: Nathan Aké (90+6' Semenyo)—N/A

Subs not used: James Trafford (GK), John Stones, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Omar Marmoush.
