Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen shared an encouraging update about his condition on Monday, after collapsing on the pitch during an international friendly against Ukraine at the Odense Isstadion in Denmark.
The 34-year-old, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, went down in the 65th minute on Sunday appearing to clutch his chest, prompting the match to be called off. Eriksen managed to walk off the field under his own power, having been only "briefly unconscious," according to Danish team doctor Morten Boesen, before being transported to hospital for further evaluation.
The incident was deeply distressing, particularly given its striking resemblance to a terrifying episode five years prior. At Euro 2021, during a group stage match against Finland, Eriksen collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest. He was saved by swift emergency medical intervention and the quick thinking of teammate Simon Kjær. Eriksen subsequently had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted to manage irregular heart rhythms, enabling him to resume his career with Brentford and later United. Most recently, he served as a key contributor for Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg throughout the past season.
Boesen confirmed after Sunday's scare that the ICD had delivered a shock to Eriksen during the game, "responding as it should."
Eriksen Gives Positive Update

"I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family," Eriksen said in a statement on Monday. "As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021. I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started.
"Beyond being thankful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical staff on the field, I am also deeply grateful to the doctors who have looked after me and my heart over the years. Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.
"For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children."
Denmark's failure to qualify for this summer's World Cup means Eriksen can use the international break to rest and recuperate at home. He has earned 151 caps for his country since his debut in 2010 and has featured in three previous World Cup tournaments (2010, 2018, 2022).
