England head coach Thomas Tuchel has issued a challenge to Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold, urging them to make the most of their returns to the national squad and demonstrate why they should never be overlooked again.
Following underwhelming spells at club level with Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively, both Palmer and Alexander-Arnold were notable absentees from Tuchel's England squad during this summer's World Cup, where the Three Lions were eliminated by Argentina in the last four.
As Tuchel looks to begin a fresh chapter, he has decided to reintegrate both players into the England setup, giving them the opportunity to reassert themselves on the international stage.
"They've had a solid start to the season," Tuchel acknowledged. "They never did anything wrong — we simply went with different players. Now a new competition begins.
"Cole has rediscovered his form. Assists, crucial goals. I think he has something to prove. The same applies to Trent. He was never unselectable. Now is his moment to come into camp and show the best version of himself. He joins us as a right back.
"He needs to deliver — it's a competition. He wasn't with us at the World Cup; we put our trust in other players, and I stand by that decision.
"Now it's time to fight for his spot. He's always said he's ready for that fight. It's up to him to prove it. We have a long camp ahead, and I'm confident he'll step up."
Palmer's Resurgence Impossible to Ignore
When Palmer came off the bench to score in the Euro 2024 final, many supporters were left wondering why former manager Gareth Southgate had taken so long to deploy him.
That level of backing from England fans was notably absent as Tuchel assembled his World Cup squad. While Palmer's ability was never in question, the truth was he had failed to show it for an extended period, with the lingering effects of an early groin injury weighing heavily on his campaign.
As Palmer himself put it recently, reacting to his reduced rating in EA FC 27: "I had one leg for 10 months, f---ing hell."
Missing the World Cup afforded Palmer a much-needed period of rest. The dynamic attacking midfielder used those months to recover and recharge, and the benefits have been evident at the start of the new season.
Displaying his trademark confidence and the risk-taking flair that defined his 2022–23 breakout, Palmer has hit the ground running under Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, contributing four goals and two assists in six appearances across all competitions. That kind of output was impossible for Tuchel to ignore, and Palmer has been rewarded with a timely recall to reignite his England career.
Alexander-Arnold Facing Fight at Both Club and International Level
While Palmer is in fine form, Alexander-Arnold finds himself in a markedly different position.
Tuchel has repeatedly raised questions about Alexander-Arnold's defensive capabilities — a criticism far from new for the former Liverpool right back — and those concerns appear to be echoed by new Real Madrid manager José Mourinho. The summer signing of Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan signalled a desire for a different profile in that role.
Of his five appearances this season, Alexander-Arnold has started only three, sitting unused on the bench in two others. One of those starts came as an emergency midfielder in a Champions League fixture against Dumfries's former club. As Tuchel has made clear, that central role will not be available to Alexander-Arnold at international level.
Alexander-Arnold's attacking qualities are undeniable. What he offers from the right back position is genuinely rare and valuable, yet he finds himself working under two managers who prioritise defensive solidity above all else. If he cannot be relied upon defensively, his place in the side remains under threat.
He is one of just two natural right backs in the current England squad, alongside Tino Livramento, meaning he should see plenty of action across Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia, and a double-header with Czechia.
"It's a chance for him to claim what he believes is his — his place on the right side," Tuchel concluded. "Here we go."
