Cole Palmer Breaks Silence on Alarming Injury Struggles That Fueled His 333-Day Goal Drought
Chelsea star Cole Palmer tempered expectations following his goal against Everton, admitting he is "still managing an injury" that demands ongoing, meticulous care.
Palmer netted his first open-play goal at Stamford Bridge in 333 days during Saturday's match, outsmarting Jordan Pickford before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom corner in the first half against Everton. A dip in performance during last season's latter stages affected Palmer, with this scoring drought further prolonged by an ongoing groin problem this campaign.
The England star initially missed Chelsea's final two August fixtures due to this muscle complaint, only to return prematurely. Two-and-a-half months away from action provided Palmer ample reflection time—and resulted in a fractured toe—but insufficient recovery period.
"I wouldn't claim I'm at peak condition yet. I'm still managing an injury," he shared with BBC's Match of the Day over the weekend. "Hopefully, there's gradual improvement, but there's still progress needed.
"Things are improving. The work I've been doing with the club's physiotherapists. It's simply about avoiding excessive activity too quickly. Literally, it's a daily process. Hopefully it continues improving."

Maresca also emphasized extreme prudence. BBC's interviewer hadn't completed their inquiry about Palmer's capacity to participate in multiple matches within the same week when the Italian manager interrupted to caution: "Currently, he cannot play."
When questioned specifically about Palmer's participation in Tuesday's Carabao Cup quarter-final versus Cardiff City, Maresca acknowledged he would "likely not" be utilized.
"We've stated repeatedly that with Cole we perform better," the Chelsea manager continued. "Regrettably he missed numerous matches for us, but now he's returned and certainly he will assist us." Many wonder whether Palmer can contribute to England's World Cup campaign.
Palmer Addresses World Cup Possibilities

England boss Thomas Tuchel attended Stamford Bridge to witness Palmer's return to form firsthand. It remains uncertain whether the former Chelsea manager will select the gifted playmaker this summer after only collaborating with him during one international camp in 2025.
In characteristic relaxed manner, Palmer showed little concern about his international future. "I haven't been planning too far ahead honestly," he responded casually. "I've been sidelined for three months, I simply need to regain complete fitness. I understand my capabilities when fully healthy so hopefully I reach that point soon."
The attacking midfield depth England possesses is remarkable. Real Madrid sensation Jude Bellingham is currently competing directly with Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers for that position, while Manchester City talent Phil Foden is experiencing his finest form in years. There are also players like Eberechi Eze, Morgan Gibbs-White and Curtis Jones to evaluate.
