Cristian Romero's Future Sealed as La Liga Giants Walk Away After Contract Demands Exposed

Reports suggest that Atlético Madrid have withdrawn their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero.

In recent months, Romero has been open about potentially exploring new opportunities, reportedly dissatisfied with how the club handled his fitness management and injury rehabilitation.

The Argentine international expressed in April his desire to compete in Spain's top division.

"We'll evaluate everything once the season concludes. Honestly, I haven't discussed this with my representative yet, but I'm receptive to possibilities. My ambition is always to advance and explore new environments for continued growth," he stated.

While Atlético had been the primary suitors, AS indicates that their interest has concluded, reportedly having "lost patience with the prolonged wait" and shifted focus to other defensive options.

Romero is said to be "thrilled" by Atlético's interest in his services. However, when a "direct inquiry" was made, Tottenham firmly stated the center-back was unavailable for transfer. Atlético were reportedly discouraged from submitting any bid as Spurs showed zero willingness to negotiate.

Meanwhile, Romero has reportedly "declined" Tottenham's proposal for a contract extension. With approximately two years remaining on his existing agreement, this would typically be the period for renewal discussions.

Following Spurs' dismissal of Ange Postecoglou last month, despite the manager securing the club's first significant silverware in 17 years, Romero seemed to criticize the decision and club management.

"Ange, thank you for these two amazing seasons. You're an exceptional manager, but most importantly, a wonderful person who deserves success," Romero shared on social platforms.

"From the beginning you created a path forward despite numerous challenges that existed and will continue to exist. Most importantly, we secured silverware and made history at this magnificent club, which is what truly counts. I wish you success because you merit it, and thank you for everything."
