If there's one thing Cristiano Ronaldo isn't accustomed to, it's being substituted at the break. But new Al Nassr manager Ange Postecoglou showed no hesitation in making a bold call against the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, pulling his captain after just 45 minutes on Tuesday.
The defending Saudi Pro League champions quickly found themselves in trouble against Al Ettifaq after goalkeeper Bento was sent off just 13 minutes in. By the halftime whistle, Al Nassr were trailing 2–0.
Ronaldo earned his starting spot on Tuesday, making his first appearance from the off since rejoining the squad late following the 2026 World Cup and his wedding to longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez. The Portuguese star struggled to leave his mark, however, completing just three passes and managing only two shots in the opening half.
Rather than giving Ronaldo additional time to spark a turnaround, Postecoglou withdrew the 41-year-old and brought on Abdullah Al-Khaibari. The substitution came at the interval, with Ronaldo visibly frustrated as he ripped off the captain's armband while heading toward the tunnel.
What followed was a remarkable comeback from Al Nassr's ten men, all while Ronaldo watched helplessly from the sidelines.
Al Nassr Give Portugal the Blueprint
Al Nassr were staring down their first loss of the 2026–27 campaign when Sadio Mané pulled one back in the 74th minute, assisted by João Félix. Just three minutes later, the Portuguese playmaker was involved again, teeing up the goal Abdelelah Al-Amri slotted home to draw the visitors level.
Mané then turned back the clock to fire in a dramatic winner for Al Nassr in the 90th minute, completing an improbable comeback within the space of just 16 minutes.
The victory kept Al Nassr unbeaten under Postecoglou. The defending champions lead the Saudi Pro League table with nine points from their opening three matches—while Ronaldo has featured for just 73 minutes this season.
This stands in sharp contrast to how Portugal deployed Ronaldo at this summer's World Cup. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner played all but nine minutes for his nation at the tournament, starting every fixture for the Seleção das Quinas before they were eliminated in the round of 16 by Spain.
Ronaldo managed only three goals across five appearances, with two coming against Uzbekistan. The third was a penalty against Croatia, adding fuel to the growing debate that Portugal might be better served limiting the aging striker to a backup role and handing the attacking reins to Gonçalo Ramos.
When Portugal desperately needed goals against DR Congo, Colombia, and Spain, former manager Roberto Martínez chose to keep Ronaldo on the pitch for the full 90 minutes in each match, restricting Ramos to a mere seven minutes across those three games. The Seleção das Quinas failed to win any of them.
The one occasion Martínez gave Ramos meaningful playing time, the striker netted the decisive goal against Croatia — a match in which Ronaldo had been taken off in the round of 32.
Postecoglou's fearlessness highlights the rewards that can come for coaches willing to substitute Ronaldo when he's not performing. Whether Portugal will follow the example set by the former Spurs manager remains to be seen.
Postecoglou Doubles Down on His Ronaldo Decision
Following Al Nassr's stunning 3–2 comeback win, Postecoglou shed some light on his thinking and appeared to have no second thoughts whatsoever.
"When I made the substitutions, including taking Ronaldo off, I believed the players coming on could make an impact," Postecoglou said. "I came here to help the players, so as I said, I'm proud of them because every substitute made a positive contribution.
"With Cristiano, we know he hasn't played a lot of football. With 10 men, to have him out there after 45 minutes? He did a great job in the first half. But we needed a different approach in the second half.
"I think there's a bigger story today and that is that 10 men of Al Nassr were unbelievable. That's all you should write about."
Ronaldo and Al Nassr return to action against Al Taawoun on Friday. All attention will be on how the Real Madrid legend responds to Postecoglou should another tactical adjustment be made.
