Cristiano Ronaldo Pays the Price for His Stunning Portugal Departure

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has issued a provisional suspension against Cristiano Ronaldo after he abruptly departed the Seleção das Quinas' squad during the September-October international window.

Ronaldo departed Portugal following just two appearances this autumn after a falling out with head coach Jorge Jesus. The 41-year-old was unhappy about being left on the bench against Norway and later cited further broken agreements when his manager failed to stick to a set of pre-arranged talking points during his subsequent press conference.

With the international break now concluded, the FPF has moved to act, launching a disciplinary case against Ronaldo over his dramatic departure.

"Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on Oct. 9, 2026, for the purpose of determining the potential disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on Oct. 7, 2026," the federation confirmed in an official statement.

"Without prejudice to the automatic provisional suspension to which he was subject until the proceedings were opened, a non-automatic provisional suspension of the player was ordered, and the proceedings were classified as urgent.

"The case was sent on Oct. 10, 2026, to the FPF Disciplinary Investigation Committee, with public disclosure excluded until the conclusion of the investigation."

Ronaldo Saw the Punishment Coming

Ronaldo detailed the origins of his dispute with Jesus and his reasons for walking out of camp in an extensive statement. Among the thousands—yes, thousands—of words, Ronaldo acknowledged that sanctions were likely heading his way.

"The consequences of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I believe the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player; I am a team captain, and that is an aggravating factor.

"I have already apologized, but I know that actions must have consequences. Anyone in football as I am knows that, regardless of each person's status, the rules are the same for everyone."

The exact penalty is yet to be determined, but Ronaldo faces a ban that could potentially keep him out for the November international window—and possibly longer, should Portugal decide a lengthier suspension is warranted.

Jesus's side have two further UEFA Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales on the schedule, which could take place without Ronaldo. Portugal have not appeared to miss him recently, however; they won all four of their autumn matches, with Ronaldo absent for three of them.

How a Suspension Impacts Ronaldo's Farewell

Ronaldo concluded his explosive statement by confirming that the federation intends to give him a fitting send-off when he eventually decides to retire. A suspension would likely not alter that plan, but could potentially delay it.

Despite the tension between Jesus and Ronaldo, multiple reports suggest the federation is eager to repair its relationship with its all-time top scorer. When the moment arrives for Ronaldo to call time on his career, Portugal will undoubtedly give him the farewell he has earned.

However, that moment may still be some way off. Many assumed his falling out with Jesus would prompt Ronaldo to retire, but he has firmly dismissed those rumors.

"If I am physically well, playing for my club, hopefully with goals, after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team."
