Just like that, the curtain falls on a legendary chapter.
After more than twenty years, Cristiano Ronaldo has officially brought his storied Portugal career to a close, sharing the news in a heartfelt, extended Instagram video in which he said it was time "to hand back the number seven shirt of our national team."
Few international careers in the history of the sport can match what Ronaldo has achieved. Across 234 caps, the five-time Ballon d'Or recipient found the net a staggering 146 times, establishing all-time records for both international appearances and goals in men's football.
While every one of those 146 goals contributed to an extraordinary international legacy, certain strikes stand far above the rest—from stunning free kicks and last-minute winners to moments of pure individual magic.
Here are the five greatest goals of Cristiano Ronaldo's incredible Portugal career.
5. Trademark Ronaldo (vs. Wales, 2016)

No collection of Ronaldo's finest goals would be complete without a signature header—and few have been more iconic than his effort against Wales in the Euro 2016 semifinals.
Meeting Raphaël Guerreiro's corner, Ronaldo launched himself skyward, rising well above everyone around him to power a header into the back of the net and set Portugal on the path to the final.
Just three minutes later, he was involved once more, with his shot falling perfectly for Nani to tap home and double Portugal's lead, securing their spot in the European Championship final.
Portugal went on to claim the trophy, making Ronaldo's commanding header all the more unforgettable.
4. Putting the Swiss to the Sword (vs. Switzerland, 2019)

In truth, two of Ronaldo's three goals against Switzerland in the 2019 UEFA Nations League semifinals could easily have featured on this list.
The first was his opener: a breathtaking first-half free kick that curled into the bottom-right corner, leaving Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer completely wrong-footed and with no chance of stopping it.
His third, which sealed a devastating hat trick, was equally remarkable. Capitalizing on a loose ball after Granit Xhaka surrendered possession, Ronaldo surged forward, left his marker behind with a sharp change of pace and direction, and fired a dipping finish into the far corner.
Three goals, one emphatic statement. Ronaldo's hat trick propelled Portugal into the Nations League final, where they would go on to lift the trophy on home soil.
3. Pick That Out (vs. Armenia, 2015)
Few goals appear so effortless yet prove so spectacular.
Collecting a goal kick out of the air in the middle of Armenia's half, Ronaldo brought the ball down smoothly with his left foot, took a couple of touches forward, looked up and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner.
Scored during Portugal's Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, the stunning effort completed Ronaldo's third consecutive hat trick across club and country.
2. A Moment of Genius (vs. Hungary, 2016)

At Euro 2016, Portugal needed at minimum a draw in their final group-stage fixture against Hungary to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Things were far from going according to plan. Down 2–1 with just over 50 minutes played, Portugal were staring at an early exit from the tournament.
Enter Ronaldo.
Meeting João Mário's whipped cross, the Portuguese talisman produced a moment of sheer brilliance, flicking the ball with an audacious backheel on the half-volley and sending it beyond goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi and into the bottom corner.
Absolutely sensational. And Ronaldo wasn't done yet. After Hungary restored their lead just minutes later, he struck again to complete his brace, securing a dramatic 3–3 draw and guaranteeing Portugal's progression to the knockout rounds.
1. Coming in Clutch (vs. Spain, 2018)
What a moment this was... 🤯

Portugal's 3–3 draw with Spain at the 2018 World Cup remains one of the tournament's all-time classics—and Ronaldo was unquestionably the main attraction.
Trailing La Roja 3–2 in the 88th minute, Ronaldo, who had already netted twice, stood over a free kick just outside the penalty box.
With the entire world watching, the Portuguese icon stepped up and delivered in typically breathtaking fashion, whipping a ferocious effort over the wall and into the top corner. Spain goalkeeper David de Gea could only watch helplessly as the ball flew past him, earning Portugal a vital point and completing Ronaldo's hat trick.
The very definition of clutch.
