Following his recreation of two signature celebrations that belonged to his deceased teammate Diogo Jota, Darwin Núñez expressed his belief that Liverpool's departed striker was present to "celebrate with me" during the club's initial match following his death.
Liverpool made the journey to Preston North End's Deepdale stadium for an emotionally intense pre-season match on Sunday afternoon. A mere 10 days after the heartbreaking confirmation that Jota and his sibling André Silva had perished in a vehicular collision, the Reds decided to proceed with the previously scheduled encounter.
The match—which Liverpool ultimately claimed 3–1—served as a moving tribute compilation for Jota. Both Preston's squad and supporters extended their condolences to the former Portuguese international, while Liverpool's contingent endeavored to deliver a heartfelt personal tribute.
Upon putting Liverpool ahead 2–0 shortly into the second period, Núñez brought his forearms together in a clapping motion, recreating the 'baby shark' celebration that Jota had famously executed. Following this gesture, the Uruguayan striker assumed a cross-legged seated position and began mimicking the action of playing with an imaginary gaming controller.
Jota was passionate about video gaming, establishing his own esports organization and claiming victory in a FIFA tournament among Premier League athletes during the COVID pandemic.
