David de Gea Breaks Silence on Real Madrid Transfer That Never Happened

David de Gea has vowed to reveal the full story behind his collapsed 2015 move to Real Madrid once he retires, suggesting there are still untold secrets waiting to be disclosed.
De Gea attracted intense interest from Real Madrid throughout the months preceding summer 2015, after cementing his reputation as among the world's elite goalkeepers. A return to his native city nearly materialized when Manchester United reached agreement on a player exchange deal featuring Keylor Navas.
However, the necessary documentation failed to be filed before Spain's transfer window closed and the entire deal fell through.
De Gea, who had spent just four years in Manchester at that time, ended up penning a fresh contract within two weeks and remained at the club until his long-term agreement expired in 2023.

"Once my playing days are finished, I'll reveal what truly occurred that day," De Gea shared with Cronache Di Spogliatoio. "When specific events unfold, there's always a purpose behind them.
"I remained in Manchester and found contentment there. [Thibaut] Courtois made the move [to Real Madrid in 2018], securing his position at Atlético following my exit [in 2011]. He performed excellently, and I'm pleased for his success."
De Gea had originally accepted a contract extension to remain with Manchester United past 2023, but circumstances shifted when it became apparent that incoming manager Erik ten Hag demanded a goalkeeper with superior distribution skills, setting his sights on André Onana. The Spanish keeper took his time returning to competitive football and ultimately sat out a complete campaign before signing with Fiorentina.
"I turned down opportunities from England because after dedicating so many years to a club like United, you develop feelings that prevent you from wanting to represent another English team. Playing elsewhere in England was unthinkable for me," he clarified.
